AlbumSelect alternative?

Not sure if this is the right forum section to ask about this.

Would like to know if anyone has built a lighter weight version of the DTHML AlbumSelect module. I am looking at around 4000 albums in the tree. The amount of data sent isn't a problem, but the javascript running time is. I intend to have a look at this and perhaps replace most of the javascript with unordered lists (UL tags) and some CSS, leaving javascript for the callbacks. But if anyone has already done it, please let me know.
