G1 to G2 Album and Image metadata mapping question

In Gallery 1 we have lots of captions that are too big for the summary field so we opted to use description which worked fine for top-level albums and images. We hit a problem when we noticed that the "captions" of sub-albums actually seem to be "descriptions" and were getting truncated during the importation process because they were still getting mapped to G2 summary behind the scenes instead of to description.

With this in mind, can anyone verify that the following is true?

In Gallery 1 top level albums have different metadata than sub albums. In top level albums you get to edit a caption for that album. In sub-albums, the text that appears under the thumbnail of an album is a description. As far as I can tell, there is no caption for sub-albums.

If above is true, does Gallery 2 offer any way to control the way that descriptions of sub-albums are mapped to Gallery 2 during the import process?
