using Gallery2 with Joomla 1.5 and the Gallery Bridge Component

hopefully for the experts, this should be a straightforward question / answer.
we are hosted with unitedhosting, we have installed joomla 1.5. we then installed gallery2. both of these have been successful.
we then tried to install the Gallery 2 Bridge. and thats when i learned how to cry, in buckets.
the problem we have is that all the documentation refers to the install as :

Go to menu --> choose 'installers' and then select 'components'. This will take you into the component installer screen. Click on 'browse' button and find the G2 bridge component you have downloaded and upload it (making sure it is still zipped up).

in Joomla 1.5, i don't think this is the case, it must be Extensions / Install / Upload Package File.

when i use this, i get the following result :
* JFTP::mkdir: Bad response.
* JFTP::chmod: Bad response.
* Unable to create destination

obviously there is a permissions issue ?

could anyone tell me what i need to do to achieve a integration of Joomla1.5, Gallery2 & Gallery2 Bridge.

many thanks, if anyone provides the answer, i'll buy them a beer. Honest

kind regards

John

Wow, this is coming late John, and I apologize for that. I'm not a Gallery2 or a Joomla expert, but I get by.

JFTP is new, and only appears in Joomla 1.5. When you installed Joomla, it asked for this information to allow you to be able to use FTP to upload files. I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with Unitedhosting. Is this how you upload files to the server? By FTP?

Also, what version of the Gallery2 Bridge are you using? The last version I have used is 2.13. 2.14 was released, but it's buggy as heck. Add to the fact, that the Joomla.org download site is having problems, and you have some issues getting everything set up. Also, an official version of Gallery2 Bridge that's compatible with Joomla 1.5 has not been released yet. I'm waiting on that myself.

Does anyone know when a Gallery2 - Joomla 1.5 RC bridge will be available?

Thanks!

Since there is no officila bridge yet I thought to write down my solution.

I gave up on bridging/integrating gallery2 with joomla 1.5. Instead since I use phpbb3 as a forum and I didn't really needed the users being sync in joomla, I used the phpbb3/gallery2 integration which worked perfect and it gives the forum some extra features as well.

But of course I needed to show photos from gallery2 to the frontpage for I which use Joomla. I used the external imageblock with the help of joomla's module "Jumi", to show photos from gallery2 to joomla. But unfortunately the links on the photos were opening directly to gallery's page something I didn't wanted.

So, since gallery is integrated to the forum, I decided and changed the header of the template of my forum and I made it look exactly like my joomla's template.

I removed the header of gallery's template and with some more changes both forum, and gallery looks like being integrated with joomla. That way I have joomla bridge free.

Unfortunately I am doing this locally, I will have the website live in a couple of days and I might write down all the changes I did in case someone need to do the same.

The alpha bridge seems to work pretty good so far. I haven't found any issues with it.

And here I thought I was lacking in brains...
I have been unable to get the Gallery2 Image block to function properly in Joomla 1.5.7
Also in the Gallery if I tell it to make the thumbnails square it won't show most of the photos...
In Joomla I have an image block set to show random images, but it always shows a blank, and when you click on the image it gives you an error 404... I have been banging my head on the table for over a week... I know it can be done but finding the docs to do it is like poking overcooked pasta through the eye of a needle... Is this problem part of the same headach that is being discussed, or do I just have a loose nut behind the keyboard?

I love the gallery, and it's integration with photobug, which is my primary objective.
Also how do I keep people from right clicking on the images to steal them (I am hosting some stock photos that I want them to buy to suport my animal rescue facility). Am I asking for too much at this stage of the game?
I have all the htaccess stuff set up and friendly url's set, Search Friendly (SEF?) stuff enabled in joomla and working properly and also in Gallery2.
I am running the version of Gallery that was downloaded from here last tuesday, Joomla 1.2.7, and apachee... (xampp package).
I also want my users to be able to use the Gallery java upload app from inside Joomla without all the gallery page stuff because it is too complicated for many of my users to use for contributing photos...

Looking for a miracle...
Thanks guys!

Did this project die?

After using gallery2 for many years in different versions and running it with Joomla 1.0.1.3 and Joomla 1.5.0.8 a do ask myself if this project just died away? I am aware that talking about this is not very popular because the people who work on it do it for free, it, nevertheless, would be fair to talk frank about it, because of all the newbys here.

1. Over the past few years there has never been a final version - all you got it the all time alpha release on: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/gallery2_bridge/frs/
2. The only real running version for Joomla 1.5.08 is the one of sil3nt at: http://trac.4theweb.nl/g2bridge/browser/branches/sil3nt (he shall be praysed forever !) but the cb_plugin does not work with the new joomla version (at least I got no answer on any of all the forums about this subject the matter of integrating gallery2 into cb of Joomla 1.5.8. I do run it sucessfully with Joomla 1x though and it runs well without the cb integration on Joomla 1.5.8 and Gallery 2.3.) The last change sil3nt made was an change at the readme.txt which does not solve the problems.

3. I think it would be nice just to pronounce that one has no time for a project anymore. For example, the project is still runned under the name of micheal billand which did the last change exactly TWO year ago. Which, to be frank, is deadly to any project.

4. Maybe the administrators of Gallery2 could flag some project at least as half dead, just to let people know what to expect about it.

I hope I did not offend anybody, this would not be my intention in any way. I just would like to clear things for all new users of ther very much apprechiated Gallery2. So they would not spend hours and days trying to install Gallery2 into cb of Joomla 1.5.8.

After fumbling through the process of making Gallery2.3, Joomla 1.5.9 with Community Builder 1.2 / VirtueMart, and latest sh404sef Component all shake hands and play nice, I realized this incredibly powerful image gallery is simply the best out there so far.(OpenSource) Since a lot of guys and gals seem to be experiencing difficulties, I want to offer this post to anyone that finds this information useful.

Following the links in this forum are where I obtained my information:

Excellent Link : http://trac.4theweb.nl/g2bridge/browser/branches/sil3nt/

Gallery 2 Bridge (filenames)- com_g2bridge_2.1, plg_g2bridge_auth, plg_g2bridge_user, plg_g2bridge_search, plgcb_g2bridge_cb, Gallery2Template-CBhotlinkhack

Gallery 2 Path (Important) '/home/username/public_html/gallery2foldername/embed.php'

Gallery 2 Uri (URL) 'http://mysite.com/gallery2foldername/'

Login Redirect '../index.php?option=com_g2bridge&view=gallery&Itemid=141'

Although I am skeptical about my Login Redirect URL, I did take precautions by adding in an additional login Redirection module to help get folks to the right link when logging in.

SEF configuration may not be optimal, but is working seemlessly. I have selected 'use default handler' concerning the configuration of the g2bridge component within sh404sef. I will be working on this further when I have more time, possibly building a custom sef_ext.php file for better sef urls.(I am not affiliated with any of these fine products - there may be a plug in for this g2_bridge for sh404sef component, have not located one yet :)

Using Community Builder version 1.2 and sh404sef (common bundle) there are a few more steps to make the marriage a lasting one.

Utilize the htaccess.txt (Mofified) file in the "Excellent Link" above. I left the Cookie Path in the Gallery2 admin at default values and let the bridge handle it with the provided auth, and user plugins activated. **Disable Joomla User Authentication Plugin**

Still learning, I have more platforms than what is mentioned above integrated at one time, ie Wordpress, Coppermine, SMF, and a few others. Once you are able to enter the correct path and url, its stable with all plugins installed and enabled.

Basically This software "Gallery2" is awesome, powerful and capable of driving you nuts. So take the steps to this bridge into Joomla with the same care as the install process of the Gallery2 install. One Step at a Time, but the work is well worth it in my opinion, Better than Coppermine! Awesome Job!!

This was my project flow to get things working with latest Joomla 1.5.9. So I hope this project is not dead. I look forward to seeing what is next from the Gallery2 Team.

Hi dcaapn

I am just wondering, if your profile in cb_plugin does show the pictures of the members. I tried to install it on Joomla 1.5.9 using gallery 2.3 but user do not see their pictures in the cb profile. Although, the community builder does not see any problems. I use cb 1.2 without (Joomla native). As sil3nt does state it is not suitable c.b 1.1 which means I would have do run Joomla in legacy mode - I don't like the idea. I does run on www.bilderforum.ch without problems (Joomla 1.x; CB, Gallery 2.3)

Quote:
Community builder Plugin:
plgcb_g2bridge_cb.zip
This plugin adds the images of each user to a tab of the cb Userprofile. (only works with cb1.1)

Do you have by any chance a idea to solve the problem?

What do you mean exactly with "Gallery2Template-CBhotlinkhack". I could not find the file.

best regard to you an your pets ;-)

Verified that I am using "legacy' mode. The Member pages do have the images but it I have to disable the sef redirection. Thank you for your response. I started out with CB 1.1 and upgraded. Had hoped it was 100%, but that went away with my session data. grr

Disabled the cb plugin, otherwise everything else is working fine. I may just regress back to cb 1.1.

Add me to the Eagerly waiting list.

Gallery 2 Path : /Library/WebServer/Documents/gallery2/embed.php

Gallery 2 Uri : http://localhost/gallery2/

this path for Mac OS

Gallery 2 Path : c:/wamp/www/gallery2/embed.php

Gallery 2 Uri : http://localhost/gallery2/

this path for Windows using wamp

I have found the solutions for this...

Cheers...

Sorrry technicalsathish but I think you are talking about something else.

What we are looking for are not URL (I suppose we all in this thread know how to run a gallery) the thing we are looking for is to integrate gallery into Joomla 1.5.x and the Joomla Community Builder. This too it not a problem.

The only thing is a plugin built for Communitiy Builder 1.2 for Joomla 1.5.x whitch does not show the pictures of the users wihin their personal page (account) after he has logged in.

Please read the thread from the beginning, to get the full idea.

Good News Update... http://www.petsandtheirowners.com has images working!
Our site is FREE, and primary focused on children and adults who can show off images and stories of their pets. We have disabled public access to certain features for security of our minor aged members. Feel free to create an account and check us out.

I found the file I used to fix CB and the links to the gallery images.( CB Hotlink Hack and all the files I used are attached to this post.

I am not sure about the 'Legacy' being an issue, but to recap, my site is using CB 1.2, Joomla 1.5.9, sh404sef with legacy enabled. I did have to rebuild menu links and clean sef urls while I was NOT logged into the site (front end). But after all the users bases are synced, including fireboard or any other component capable of syncing with the joomla user base. All worked without broken links or images with the red X, now shows proper image and links to the proper gallery on g2 embeded with the g2 bridge.

I have not utilized an image block or sidebar as of yet, but have not the need with the images working from their profile page. Important Note to anyone attempting the bridge of gallery2 and CB: It has been my experience that anything worth while takes work. This endeavor has been worth it and a learning experience for me, but has presented many challenges. Some of those 'Challenges' have been due to the sef component I use. This will work with other sef components like sh404sef. Don't let it whoop ya.

Unfortunately, I do use the 'Legacy Plugin' and that may be a problem for some. I do not see it as an issue. If I am wrong, please set me straight. I have had no issues with using Joomla 1.5x with Legacy Mode turned on since we first migrated from 1.0.15 versions.

Cheers!

Hi dcaapn

Thank you very much for your effort. I realy did not try the legacy mode - how stupid - as I think developers should by now change to Joomla 1.5.x. But of course it is a lot of work and no money... so I get that point. I will test this hopefully this week and give you a feedback. It will be shown at www.swissphoto.eu. You are right about the work on it, I find it always an interesting challenge.

I will continue testing on my end. If I have time, I will create a custom sh404sef plugin for this g2bridge. Maybe someone will beat me to it...(g2bridge authors or the sh404sef folks!)

Just would be awesome to have the images working WITH customizable sef urls, but I may be asking for too much just yet, as it was a challenge getting things to work without worrying about the sef urls.

Additionally, I plan on donating more than just my time to this project. I think these guys that wrote the php for this Gallery Rock!

Regards,

dcaapn

Additional Note: Working with IE and Firefox from windows platform, will test linux and other platforms later today.

Maybe you can help me. I am using the latest Joomla and G2 and G2Bridge. Please take a look at www.newburghfire.com/site and click on the NVFD Photographs link. I am not sure why, but my pictures are not loading :(

Well just checked my installation after the post of dcaapn. Just had to activate the legacy mode and now it runs fine.

I use:
Joomla 1.5.9
Gallery2 Bridge from silt3nt
CB 1.2
Gallery 2.3

Thats probably another problem.
- either you did not set the CHMOD of the directories of the albums right (must be 755) or you must change the URL in the Joomla Admin of the bridge.
- or you di

/home/youruser/public_html/gallery2/embed.php
http://yourdomain/gallery2/

you must set the slahes exactly at the beginning and end. A single slash set or not can make the thing go wrong. Good luck!

Concerning your configuration, are you using any SEF components coupled with your bridge? I have encountered issues with the images 'going away' during some update functions. You must configure the bridge with the appropriate urls for things to 'function'. Generally clearing your own browser cache as well as the url cache from your respective sef url component ensures those images stay 'visible' (regenerating your sef url cache by browsing to the 'frontpage' or 'home' link on your site - to ensure proper sef redirection) I believe in my case the image would 'go away' after I had made adjustments to the site. This may not be your issue, but I find that this bridge and the gallery are good products and seem to play well with each other once things are set up properly.

To further elaborate would need more information.

This may be helpful to some. My 'Login Redirect' field in the G2 Bridge Settings looks exactly like this:

index.php?option=com_cblogin

Could be the case for anyone utilizing CB for their User Management. (without "/")

The site that holds all of the g2bridge files, including silt3nt's branch, has been down for several days now. The forum for the project is still up but refusing my email addresses, so that's bugged to hell. If anyone has the version of g2bridge that works with Joomla 1.5x, i'd be super appreciative if you could post it somewhere I can download it.

Hi sgt-goomba2

Unfortunately neither the Gallery2 Admins nor the creater of the bridge support this forum and the bridge anymore.

This is why I have allowed myself to gather the last (working) files and put them into the download section of my site. You may find them here:

http://www.klausfrei.com/downloads/gallery2/173-gallery2-joomla-1.html

Please use a reasonable mail address to register, one that does not look like the usual spammer!
(If you like to download the bridge, you must register - sorry, but I had to avoid hotlinks and heavy traffic - I do not collect mails and will delete all of them from time to time)

I run gallery2 and Joomla on PHP 5.x

At the link below you will find an example ot Joomla 1.5.15 with Gallery2.3 integrated and working for 5 Years now. I do though not have any image modules - but they work if I wanted. Attached you will find a picture of my server configuration.

Hi hxy202

You may should start asking one question after another. If you fire away like canada above, there is hardly a chance to an answer.

1. Most problems arise because of a the hoster i.e. sever you use. I went through hell because of the my last three (quality) hoster who sweared the problem was not on their side. For three years now, my gallery2 projects are running without problems.

2. Square thumbs ar no problem at all, but you have to rebuild the thumbs in the admin section of gallery2 after you changed to square thumbs. If there are no thumbs to see at all your access rights on the server are not selected correctly. Apache (unix): 755 for directories, 644 for files. Even more important is to use the right httacess file corresponding to your installation and the server configuration.

3. If you do pasta, never ever overcook it ;-))

4. There is no way from keeping people to steal images from your Gallery2. But to be honest, if you put them on air, they will be stolen anyway at some time.

4. You are talking of "files downloaded" here, but there are no files to download here (they are hosted on a external site) neither is there a Joomla 1.2.7 ?. So what files exactly you are talking about?

5. There is no way so far (and probably will never be) for your user to upload pictures from inside Joomla to gallery2. I changed to Joomgallery (which does not match gallery2!) because most user did't understand how to upload pictures into gallery2, the guys from Joomgallery managed this part much better as does gallery3 which unfortunately is still an alpha version (feb. 2010) and need fusion to work with Joomla!

You find all the files for the gallery2 bridge here: http://www.klausfrei.com/downloads.html. These files work up to Joomla 1.5.15

They are tested on:

PHP 5.x
Gallery 2.3
Joomla 1.5.10 to 1.5.15
They do not need Legacy Mode

My server config 2009:

System: Linux 2.6.9-89.0.9.ELsmp
Apache: 2.2.11 (Unix)
PHP Versionen: 5.2.10
Perl: 5.8.8
mySQL Version: 5.0.81-community-log

And another 2010:

Betriebssystem: Linux 2.6.9-89.0.16.ELsmp
Apache: 2.2.11 (Unix)
PHP Versionen: 5.2.10
Perl: 5.8.8
mySQL Version: 5.0.81-community-log

http://www.swissphoto.net
http://www.bilderforum.ch
http://www.inselhuepfen.ch
http://www.bilderforum.eu

and if you haven't it yet, its time to go for Firefox and

You should also go check out Jfusion. silt3nt moved to jfusion.org in early 2009 and released a Joomla 1.5->G2 bridge there. I have managed to get the whole thing to work with Joomla 1.5.9, G2 and Jfusion 1.2.4. I have extra complications because I'm using Gallery 2 multisite configuration, URL rewrite's (PHP info,) and Joomla standard SEO/SEF. There is no problem on most things using frameless or wrapper mode, however I'm having issues on frameless mode with item/album actions not passing paramaters correctly. Unfortunately Chris/silt3nt has been unresponsive for 8+ months on jfusion. It does work though, just takes a bit to figure out how to do the configuration.

http://forum.4theweb.nl/showthread.php/1624-Gallery2-plug-in-for-JFusion silt3nt/Chris states he joined Jfusion team.

I'm about to give this a shot. I started using Joomla in hopes it would be easier to integrate gallery into than a "built from scratch" html page. Wish me luck! And Gadula, you are a hero :)

Edit: Well I hit my dead end, trying to figure out where to install the PLG bridge components and the php4 file.

You should also go check out Jfusion

@KyleG. You should write an short manual there! I think the community would be very grateful!

Be aware silt3nt's last answer is dated Jan 2009!
There are other things wich make me worry too:
1. On the page "Documentation" at JFusion you will find a part named "Gallery2" with a link called "Configuration Options". The only thing you find there for a very long time is: "This topic does not exist yet"

I do not say you will not be able to get that work, but you should be aware that there is plenty of work int it and nobody out there willing to help.

Hello,

ive been using the menalto bridge for joomla 1.* and gallery 2 for 4 years now on my old joomla-site. As the frist stable version of Menalto Gallery 3 is on the brink of beeing released i think its time to go for a new bridge which will work with joomla 1.5+ and with jomsocial 1.8+.

Menalto Gallery 3 has a nice REST interface which should make interfacing with it from Joomla/Jomsocial not too difficult. As i need that bridge ASAP ive contacted a software developer who has experience developing Joomla and Jomsocial plugins/modules.

Together with "Perth Lawate" from http://www.techjoomla.com we created minimal feature/functional requirements for Joomla 1.5/Jomsocial - Menalto 3 bridge;

1. User Sync & SSO between Menalto & Joomla/JomSocial either via a bridge or REST API
2. Ability to create Albums & nested Albums
3. Ability to upload Photos to Albums ( Upload resize as per settings already set in Menalto) & set title etc
4.Display :
a Ability to show the user's gallery in a Jomsocial Profile module/plugin
b. also a view to show user's albums & another to show photos in the Album
5. Ability to comment on Photos
6. Integration of Photo upload & comments in jomsocial activity stream
7. All Global settings would be as per defined in the menalto gallery installation
8. Modules to show :
+ random image
+ latest X images/album
+ Featured Image/album

Mr. Lawate quotes the development costs about 4.100 USD.

The software would be released as full Open-Source under the Gnu GPL license. I personally would invest 200 USD into the development, therefore i am looking for other people backing up the project. For handling the financial matters, like how the money is collected i am open to suggestions.

Please post here if youre interested in the development of the final Joomla 1.5 - Menalto 3 Bridge.

best regards,

Arnd
