Adding Items made easier

Here's what I need to do.

I need to add all of the descriptive fields, and custom thumbnail field, for adding an item to the AddItemFromBrowser.tpl, as well as adding a single custom field there. I also need to be able to set a default value on the custom field.

The reason I need to do this is because users don't like having to go in and edit any items they upload just to change a custom field, add a proper description, etc. Even for me it's a tedious process, especially when I may add 30 or 40 items at a time. I spend more time editing all the fields that I feel already should be available than I do adding the items.

Is anyone else in a similar situation? And can anyone help with this? Even some nudges in the right direction would help, such as were to edit the forms so they remain modular, how to get the custom fields to show along with default fields, etc.
