Can someone explain, or link to general directions on adding RSS blocks to a site? Thank you.

More than enabling the RSS module?
login as admin
click the "site admin" link
click the "modules" link on the sidebar (if using Matrix theme) "plugins" if using 2.2+
scroll down to the "Export" section
look for RSS
if found click install and then enable

if not found download the RSS module and start at the top.

I have the module enabled. It says in the Galllery2 codex:

"You should also probably enable the RSS rewrite rules in the Rewrite module, in order to make feed URLs shorter and more human-readable.

Finally, you should add the RSS block to the themes used in your Gallery. This will have two effects:

* the block itself, which users can see and pick feeds from (and get a list of all feeds)
* hidden page headers that modern web browsers will use to make it easier for the user to subscribe to the feeds "

What I would like is for that little orange RSS icon to show up in Firefox and the like, so that the site looks consistent with other RSS-friendly sites.

Any more help is appreciated!

Now the RSS module is enabled you can add it to your view:
edit album, select the theme tab, there is a dropdown of blocks to add to various views, select rss and click add. Then you will be able to sort that order as well.

Hmmm. 20 hours later and the bookmarklet shows 'feed failed to load". Could it simply be that I haen't added any images since creating the feed? it's ttl is 3 hours.

Hi all ..

I've been trying to enable RSS feeds too, and seem to be stuck. I got as far as getting this to appear in my sidebar: " RSS Feeds No feeds have yet been defined". It's not obvious to me how to actually define any feeds. The instructions in the admin guide are not clear, and the suggestions here didn't work either.

I also searched the gallery 2 support forums for "RSS" and it shows no hits, not even this thread, which I found via google.

Thanks for your help!

Curtis.

curtiscu, I think you have installed RSS feed, if you have URL rewrite module installed, active it first.

To active RSS feed,

1. Go to site admin -> RSS. you'll see 3 tabs - settings, simple feed settings & list.
There are 2 feed types, configurable rss feed & simple rss feed.

Under settings tab -> Feed Types. check the simple rss feed checkbox, save settings then click the simple feed settings tab, choose how your feed present & save. Ok, this is for Simple Rss Feed.

For configurable rss feed. Go back to settings tab, check the second checkbox and choose your settings below. As always save settings.

Go to site admin -> themes -> add rss block. Save.
Go to main gallery -> choose your album, edit -> theme -> add rss block & save.
Choose album, click configure rss feed & modify your feed.

Hopefully this help. Good luck.

hi blade.. thank you so much for your response.

I've actually already been through all the instructions you show, except for the last one.. which I don't understand. I also activated the mod_rewrite for 'simple RSS feed' and 'RSS feed'.

Here's where I get stuck ..

1 - Choose album
I assume you mean click 'edit' at the bottom of the album in question?

2 - click configure rss feed
when I click 'edit' as described above, I don't see any 'configure rss feed' link

3 - modify feed
couldn't do this step as couldn't do #2

Can you please explain to me exactly what I should be clicking on, and where I should see 'configure rss feed'? I can't see it anywhere.

thank you!

Curtis.

If you use Simple RSS feed, you won't see the configure rss feed in your main page.

1. For the edit album, add RSS block. So your user/guest can view it. If you use simple rss feed, you don't have to add rss block.
2. Why you can't see configure rss feed? answer above.
3. answer above.

Modify Simple RSS feed settings "only" in Site Admin -> RSS -> Simple Feed Settings.
If you don't see photo in your feed, make sure you choose the correct one..
ie, My Gallery has 4 albums (no photo) in main album, if I choose "Items in the album", no photo will show in feed or "Sub-albums of the album" will show albums only...
This is all about simple rss feed.

If you checked the Configurable RSS feed checkbox in site admin -> RSS -> settings. You will see the configure rss feeds in your sidebar, if you don't see it..deactive your rss, uninstall and reinstall, and try again.

thanks blade.. think something's wrong with mine.

I did the following..
- I deactivated, uninstalled, reinstalled the module.
- enabled simple RSS feed for 'items in the album and it's subalbums' (to try make anything pop up in RSS feed)
- disabled configurable RSS feeds in sidebar

.. and I simply never see anything related to RSS feeds in the sidebar or anywhere, when I click on 'edit' for an album, when logged in as admin. I don't see the little RSS icon in the url/location bar either no matter where I browse to on my site.

I even checked the apache logs and there doesn't appear to be anything in the error logs.

:(

Hi Blade,

yes I did.. see my first post where I say I see " RSS Feeds: No feeds have yet been defined" in the sidebar after adding.

But that's for configurable RSS right? I enabled both types (simple and configurable), and I see results from neither.. i.e. nothing in the sidebar other than the text I mentioned, and no rss icon in the browser location bar.

Thanks,
Curtis.

Oh, I meant after you uninstalled/reinstalled rss, did you add rss block in your site admin/themes? this step is needed in order to show rss feed in main page (admin view).

okay, lets try this -> active both feeds, add ALL rss blocks into your albums.
Can you see rss icon/rss settings in main page, probably your theme causing prob. Try uninstall, download up to date module and reinstall.

Try this simple rss feed fix - http://gallery.menalto.com/node/47076#comment-178169
remember - back up first.

[delte] Sorry, found this question in a much newer thread, and thought it best to post there instead.
