Easy Forum Integration

I'm looking to put together a new site, that contains (amongst other things) an integrated gallery & forums.

Now, I've pretty much decided that Menalto Gallery 2 should be that side of things, and I'm now looking at the forums side.

PHPBB2 seems to be favorite at the moment, but I'm concerned at how easy/difficult the integration would be, and whether or not other forum software would be easier to setup with this gallery?

Requires (free) registration. I tried registering and it won't sent me the confirmation email to access the site properly, so I don't know how good (or not) the module is. It also mentions that the module is for version 2.0.18 of PHPBB2, however the recent security release is 2.0.21

Olympus seems too far off for me to use as yet, but are there are other (free) forum options that integrate easily with Menalto?
