UPLOADING MULTIPLE PHOTOS AT SAME TIME

i just installed gallery 2 on a new website. i've got lots of photos on my hard drive that i want to upload. so far, i am only able to upload 1 pic at a time - using the "add items" function. this is very inefficient and time consuming. is there a way to upload whole groups of photos (batch mode or something) at the same time? thanks.
