This still seems to be the case in G2.3. I have done a search through my gallery for ".avi" and just modified the per-item permissions individually on all of the videos. Tedious, but it works.

Notes for future readers:

As of 2009-12:

In no version of Gallery are you able to apply special permissions to specific types of files.

In G3 (the latest version of Gallery) you can only apply permissions to albums and groups. Not to individual items or users.

Good note, nivikiam. I haven't tried out G3 yet, and I know it's supposed to be simpler and more streamlined, but I hope this oversight with regard to video playback has been accounted for.

I think one of these days I will just move all of my videos out of their respective albums into a new album just for videos. In this way I can more easily add the required permissions for video viewing. I was just hoping this oversight would have been rectified by now so I wouldn't have to go through that! But no big deal.

I'm not sure what oversight you're talking about. In regards to permissions, it's no oversight, that's was a very deliberate design decision. The permissions system in G2 is overly complex and if you have lots of users and lots of special, unique permissions (set on individual users instead of groups of people) you can really slow down your system.

As for types of files, avi is not supported in G3 (yet). A 3rd party would need to create support for that, though I think someone already has put in some hacks for it.

Assigning permissions to groups of people and to albums greatly simplifies the system and makes managing permissions and resources much easier. However, if someone really wants the old G2 type permission system, it could be done (so I'm told), someone would just need to create a module for it.

I'm just talking about the video permissions in G2... basically if you have set the default permissions so anonymous users cannot see the original full-size image, they unfortunately also won't be able to view videos. The remedy would be to have a separate permissions schema available for video file types. This is for G2... for G3 I don't care since its permissions systems is designed to be simpler (and faster) anyway. But I don't see myself migrating to G3 any time soon, if ever.

For manageability (G2 or G3) I'd have my videos in a separate album so I can manage permissions across everything instead of having to touch individual items.
