well, if u wanted to make public www.mygallery.at/mypublicfolder/, then u should add [core] view items/[core] view all versions _to that album_.
that's all
(without anything else, it would do:
visiting the index page, you see the login form.
visiting a link like www.mygallery.at/mypublicfolder/, you are able to browse this folder without login.
)

it's not.
added the core permissions to everybody, as said before. browsing to: http://photos.mygallery.at/mypublicfolder/ gives me a 404, so i tried this: http://photos.mygallery.at/g2data/albums/mypublicfolder/ gives me a 403.

Did you mean "guest" by "everybody"? It's the "guest" user you have to authorize.
If it still not works, then it might be the URL Rewrite module that you have configured so that you can not link from another site.

guest user or group everybody, the result is (almost) the same (in this case)

there is no possibility to add a "guest" or "gast". my gallery's language is german, but "jeder" should be "everybody".
there is an option "Kurze URLs" - "short URLs", its not installed, another option: "Hidden Items" - "Hide items/albums from guests until directly accessed with the right URL" is deactivated.
hm ...

ok, well think, this will never work as i'd like to do.
so i created a new group. now i want this group to see only this ONE album. how can i do this? now i can see all the other albums too, because the permissions are set to "Registrierte Benutzer" - "registered users" - core - "can see everything".
isn't there a posibillty to say: "all useres except group xxx"?
or do i have to create a new group, add all existing users to the this group, give this group the permissions to visit the other albums? - would be a lot of work. any ideas?
thanks, g. cal

I'm going to write u once again:

the perfect solution for me would be:
visiting the index page, you see the login form.
visiting a link like www.mygallery.at/mypublicfolder/, you are able to browse this folder without login.
U need: (dunno the german strings, switch into english/translate into .de for yourself pls)
indexpage: group: registered users [core] view all versions
mypublicfolder: group: EVERYBODY [core] view all versions
+make sure NOT to apply permissionchanges recursively!!
it MUST work.

no, this is the configuration since post 3. nothing changed. still getting: http://photos.mygallery.at/mypublicfolder/ ... 404, http://photos.mygallery.at/g2data/albums/mypublicfolder/ ... 403.
