I see so many different themes in the right random gallery box. where do people get these or is it just that easy to write a new theme. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
thanks. that is very helpful. how hard is it to write your own. i read the knowledge base on this but it didnt seem easy. i am sure its not. but for instance JOomla isnt easy to template at first into you understand it just a few functions and styled positions.

Start with a theme that is close to what you want. Don't forget about color packs as well. Then you can make a clone: http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:Themes#Cloning_a_theme
of that theme & color pack and customize it to your liking. Having a copy will allow you to go back if you make a mistake.
play with the *.tpl files and ask spacific questions in the customization forum with a URL to what you want to do.

Steve Lineberry has a great example of all themes: http://pictures.thelineberrys.com/gallery2/gallery2.php
Then there is the user contrubuted themes on the download page, one you made your choice.
