i have just upgraded my gallery which was on 2.0.4 to 2.1 and i for both installation and upgrade, i used full developer versions of the code. I have selected "tuwannu" theme when i installed gallery 2.0.4 a week ago. Now when i upgraded it to 2.1, that theme is no more working. I have customized that theme a lot and would like to have the same theme now. what do i do ? i'm attaching the error that is shown in the themes section of admin. here is what i see: |

Never tried that theme but this:

worked for my custom themes as well.

Along the same lines, it looks like every time Gallery puts out an update, it breaks user contributed themes and modules. This is not good. I wonder whether it's just a "getting situated" in the 2.x versions or whether this is going to go on continually? It kind of makes you fearful to upgrade. At least it does me.

User contributed themes and modules are being added to the general release as well.
There is only so many devs to go around and they don't have time to go through everybody’s custom theme/module.
If the custom theme/ module developer is not active then how can we help? Going through each end every custom theme/module is not an option.
We post changes to the API and there is this support forum.
We release beta versions so that 3rd part devs can test and make changes.
Changes are inevitable, especially in the early stages of development, in order to make a better product.
Every time? This is only the second major release of G2.
Come and join the dev team to help out if you wish. If you don't have coding skills there is plenty of other jobs open.

dave, in what way people, without coding skills can helpout gallery team? I am an SEO Consultant by profession and work on several projects. is there something i can do too?

I installed the theme called Carbon after a few months after upgrading from G1 to G2. Soon after, an update came out. I upgraded and Carbon no longer worked. Luckily, after a few weeks, the guy who did the Carbon theme updated it and it was working again. Along comes 2.1 and it stops working again.
It sounds like I'm complaining but really I'm not. I'm not a coder, so I don't understand the nuts and bolts of it, but I just thought a theme would be kind of like a CSS file. An upgrade might make some things look weird, but I never imagined it would cause the whole thing to come to a halt or knock out a theme.
And no of course I don't expect people to be updating user mods. All the work is truly appreciated.
While I haven't ever helped the dev team, I have contributed monetarily back in the G1 days. What kind of projects are available for someone with limited coding experience?

Sure, To quote a Viking "We use security people, usability experts, IA people and the likes. Why not let someone analyze G2 in a SEO light?"
Perhaps you could write a detailed report, write up of recommended changes, and reasoning behind each. We did that with http://openusability.org/ . The installer was greatly improved with this report.
Another area is the documentation. Perhaps you can do a detailed write up on some of the glaring things people do wrong with their galleries and tell them why your recommendations would be beneficial.
Next is the forums. Go through them and offer to assist the questions that you already know or point the user to answers that you have read before. There is a few threads on SEO. Perhaps there is a few points you can make to help others.
In addition the the things I said to gangavalli it all depends on your skill set. Documentation is one of the areas that always need improvement. Coders don't like doing it and are not that good at it anyway because they know the steps already.
Pick a area on the codex that you feel needs improvement and make some changes.
And like you said there is always monetary contributions and we appreciate your previous donation.
As for your issue with the 3rd party theme. This is on the list to be fixed in the next release. Gallery will check during the upgrade and warn you that xxx theme/module will be disabled before the upgrade can proceed. Then you will have to option to continue on or get upgrade to those items as well or disable those older modules/themes.
