AUTHOR'S NOTE (2007-05-14): The latest version of this theme can be found here:

g2theme-debaser-0.9.3.zip

and is also available as part of gallery-contrib: trunk/gallery2/themes/debaser

=====================================================

Hiya - finally getting around to cleaning up a theme I've been playing with. Your feedback and comments are most welcome.

Theme: Debaser 0.1

Description: This is a very 'photo-centric' theme, most of the photo/album attributes are hidden from view, but can be revealed.

Demo:
- See it in action here: jacko theme demos
Download:
- Get it here: g2theme-debaser-0.1.zip
(includes theme and colorpacks. unzip in your G2 install directory)

Requirements: This theme requires G2.1-RC2 or greater.

Highlights:
- "Not so grid-like" photo presentation.
- Optional special effects: image fade-in, and sliding sidebar.
- Optional rounded corners.
- Header and footer content can be customized using the Theme Admin UI
(no need to hack the .tpl files to make this theme match your site).
- Background images can be applied to the pages and item frames (your
mileage may vary)
- Tested on Windows (IE, FF 1.5), Mac (Safari, FF 1.5)

Color Packs:
This theme ships with four color packs. It's highly recommended that this theme is used with one of these colorpacks (or colorpacks derived from these). The Debaser colorpacks have a few more attributes defined than the old ones.

Known Issues:
- The "fading" special effect doesn't seem to work in IE.
- Rounded corners are not really compatible with background images
(though with proper color schemes, you can fake it well enough)
- I've not really tested this with many of the optional modules that I
don't actually use. it's quite possible (probable?) that some won't
look so hot. I know in some cases font colors are mismatched w/
backgrounds making text difficult to read.
- I have not tested this theme embedded.

This is a great theme, and I would like to use it, but I got some problems...

I unzipped the file and uploaded it to my gallery2/install/themes folder

Now, when I go to the 'all theme's' page, there's no Debaster theme to select, only the standard theme's.

Dit I forgot something?

Can anybody help me? Thank you

Quick note....

Went to add View EXIF/IPTC and received the following errors:

"There was a problem processing your request" at the top, and below the photo section of the theme editing:

Format: [module.BlockName param=value] ...

The more I worked with the theme tho, well, this is a cool theme.

Indeed. I have just discovered this error as well. It has to do with the fact my theme is using prototype.js. Prototype changes how JS arrays work which seems to be messing up the javascript that processes the block manipulation in the theme UI. But I haven't gotten around to investigating further yet.

The only way to manipulate the blocks in this theme, at the moment, is to hack the theme's theme.inc. In the constructor, you can specify the default blocks you want the theme to use (in the "$this->setStandardSettings(...)")

I really love this theme! But I've got some problems:

- When I want to minimize the frames around my photo's, then I'll get an "error on page" in my browser (see the picture below). So I can't minimize them! :(

- I would like to get the theme page like yours (the demo page from the Debaster theme). So I would like to have the thick round frames around the photo's. I cant find this option!

Can you help me please?! Thanks!

Yoikes... may I ask, do you plan on drilling down any more into the work to allow the manipulation of the blocks with hacking into theme.inc? This is really a terrific theme. Your inclusion of the header/footer function is masterful. But the overall function of the theme has a distinct feel to it that as you state in your first message, is more photo, film like.

Hmm, your Javascript is crashing and things aren't hiding that are supposed to be hiding. Can you try loading your page in firefox, and checking the "Tools->JavaScript Console" for the error? Or send me a link to your gallery and I'll look myself.

thanks for the feedback! And yea, I hope to look at the prototype problem tonight. I did manage to set up an isolated example of the problem: http://www.jacko.com/dev/protonogo/ (you need the Firefly Firefox extension to see the problem in action).

Hey, that's most excellent to drill back into it. I admit to being out of my league in determining the problem. I did look at the example but not having the skills to interpret it, um.... well, you get the idea. I'm am unskilled in this.

What I do know is the theme characteristics are spot on. The header/footer is tremendous, as is the BG image use. Will say that what is especially keen is your attention to what I call... "image first". Presenting the image with the ability to call on menu and meta-material is simply elegant. I can't think of another word for it. It's elegant.

What can I with my unsophisticated skills do to help?

First off all, thank you for trying to help me!

It's no problem with the JavaScript in my browser, cause the demopage from the Debaster theme displays correctly. Can you have a look at my page and try to fix it? http://www.tommysweb.nl/gallery2

Thank you so much! :)

Oh, so I know what the problem is. I thought it was fixed in the version I released, but I guess not. There is a typo in the themes/debaser/theme.js file which causes Internet Explorer to freak out. If you go to the end of this file on your server you will see a "}," on third to last line. The comma ",", should not be there (and should be deleted). Firefox doesn't have a problem with this, but IE does.

I hope to release an update to the Debaser theme in a day or so, and it won't have this problem. But until then you can just delete that comma and your gallery should be fine.

Cheers!

Well, I for one will look forward to your anticipated release. Your vision of handling images first then allowing metadata to flow into the frame is just plain elegant....

Awesome theme Dawg :)

I have done that little fix with the comma, but I have found two problems that I hoped you could help with.

The 1st may not be a problem at all - the first time i tried a full screen slideshow it came back with some error stating that a file was missing from the gallery folder. However I have not been able to replicate this error, and the slideshow has worked fine since, so I can't tell you exactly which one or whether it really is a problem ....

Second, the EXIF data does not show when I click on the [+] under a photo. The [+] works fine in all the levels above the individual photo to reveal the title, date and owner, but at the individual photo level it only changes to a [-], but no EXIF data. This info is present when I use other themes.

Otherwise I like it a lot

Cheers

Just got that first error again on a different sub-gallery.

A small popup arises:

Quote:
An optional part of gallery, Imagemagik, could not be found or is malfunctioning. Gallery remote will not be able to resize images before uploading them, and loading thumbnails and previews will be much slower.

The slideshow then appears to function normally ...

Someone may also be interested to know that the ?link? on the popup "Gallery Remote Known Problems" does not seem to be functioning.

Cheers

One other minor beef:

Once you have selected "Show Sidebar" is it possible to have this persist until you select "Hide Sidebar" rather than having the sidebar disappear each time you change subgallery or picture?

I still love your work ;)

Hi, funny you should ask. I'm actually just about finished with the next rev. I've actually rewritten all the "special effects". It's a little cleaner, and more cross-browser compatible. Under the hood I now use the Yahoo UI libs instead of Rico. Here's a sneak preview:

Just gotta clean up some of the cruft. Cheers!

Hey Jackdog!

I love your theme, and am going to use it for my groups website that is specifically photos. I really love the look of the updated theme, and was wondering when this will be available? I haven't implemented gallery2 yet, but was just getting ready to. Now I think I'm going to have to wait til this is official from you! :) (when we're officially moved over to gallery2 and your theme, I'll pm you the link and you can check it out.)

Great job, the theme is perfect for us. (and the olive theme fits right into our color scheme)

jackodog,

that's a great theme! it's fun to play with it by hovering over lots of thumbs in a short time :)

i've got some small suggestions:
- it would be great if the whole thumbnail was clickable / the link area such that the user doesn't have to click on the small link text.
if it's already supposed to be clickable, it doesn't work reliably in IE7 / opera.

- i think the contrast of the link color against the background is a not high enough (next / previous links, breadcrums / sidebar links).

- the placement of the the next / prev links is a little unintuitive.

other than that i like it very much. it's very clean, i like the effects, layout and the colors. good work!

Indeed that was the intent, but it was not so thoroughly tested (well, not at all :) on IE7/Opera).

I've posted a minor update here:

http://www.jacko.com/download/g2theme-debaser-0.9.1.zip

which fixes some obvious display breakage in IE7 (not the click thing though), and some tweaks of the colorpacks.

Hi,

I'm developing a site that looks like this.
http://www.drawingsfromlife.com/gallery_page_01/Gallery_Page_01.html

It's basically a simple gallery. The thing is he made all the height of the image thumbs
150px and the length varies. Also He has 4 images per column, except one that has 5 images.
I can't seem to get around this problem.

I've installed your theme at
http://profetto.pojack.com/dorian/main.php?g2_itemId=19
I've gotten it to look close but can't get that 5th row thing to work.

Any ideas or hints on what I should be looking at.
The ccs, or the template.tpl or the inc.?

Your theme is very interesting and is awesome by the way.
I made a color pak for it. called dorian. It's a darker green.

The Tile theme had an interesting theme control page where you could assign each image to
a row and Column. I'm thinking of somehow incorporating that into your
theme. But i'm not sure if it would solve the problem of the 5 images in that one row.
When using the Tile theme, I created 5 rows, and modified the css to get rid of the
border and empty spaces, but it spaced all the images out accorrding to the table.

Thanks and YOur theme is great.
I upgraded to firefox2 and installed .1 of your theme and it works fine.
but THen I saw at the end of the forum .9, and installed that. It didn't seem
to work. (the javascript) Not sure if it's firefox or the javascript.

Hi Vito,

First of all I realize that the 0.9 version of this theme depends on some JavaScript libraries that are part of Gallery 2.2, but not 2.1. If you're not ready to install the 2.2 RC1, you can just download the Yahoo UI libs and put the following files are in your gallery installation in the following location:

[yourgallery]/lib/yui/yahoo-min.js
[yourgallery]/lib/yui/dom-min.js
[yourgallery]/lib/yui/event-min.js
[yourgallery]lib/yui/animation-min.js

Regarding your photo placement issues, my theme has two problems:
* it lays the photos out in a grid. so every row has the same number of photos.
* it squishes photos together vertically, and you want to squish them together horizontally.

If all of your photos were the same width, instead of height, my theme would look much nicer with them.

To get the look you are looking for with debaser you'd need to mess with the album.tpl. You'll see that it has a looping structure where it lays out a table. Maybe you can set up a one column table where each row has 4 relatively positioned divs. That way they can snuggle next to each other. It won't get you 5 images in just one of the rows though. To do that you'd have to get clever and interrogate the sizes of the images to figure out how many fit.

Or, here's a different idea. The floatrix theme (that comes with gallery) dynamically lays out its rows (without tables). If you used that logic (but got rid of the part that makes it's photo cells a fixed width), it might get you what you want.

Anyway, good luck. It's a pretty neat idea to have all your photos the same height, despite the aspect ratio. Can make for an interesting layout.

Cheers, chris

Love the theme... I have started to use it on my album. I would like to see if I can get the sidebar to stick if possible. Also, for some reason I can't get the EXIF data to show on individual photos. I am using 2.1.2 core 1.1.0.2 and I installed the Yahoo libraries in the posting above.

Any help you can provide would be great.

This theme is FANTASTIC!!!!!

It replaced my old, handmade page of artwork (http://www.hell-toupee.com/chestnuts) with something equal (http://www.hell-toupee.com/chestnuts2)in aesthetics (if not nicer, frankly) and equal in function. And much improved in ease of use..

Warning: Some images in my gallery, though just drawn, may be considered NSFW.

Thanks for such a good theme!! I couldn't find anything I liked. This is great. Keep up the good work.

Greetings - Thanks for the feedback Curtis and Toupee! I've just had a chance to fix two problems with the photo page:
* The "[+]" (show me the photo prroperties) button was broken. Now, when moused over it shows the EXIF.
* The "<<prev" "next>>" navigation buttons were squished.

You can find it here: http://www.jacko.com/download/g2theme-debaser-0.9.2.zip

Hmm. Because the sidebar can pop-down on top of the photos I'm not sure how it would make sense for it to be permanently shown. I guess the answer is I don't have plans to do this.

But if you wanted to, I think it's just a matter of:
1 - add a fixed width margin to the left of the photos to make room for the sidebar.
2 - mess with the Javascript a bit: there are two functions Debaser.showSidebar, and Debaser.hideSidebar. Manually call the show sidebar, and disable the code that hides it (poke around in the templates/album.tpl and templates/photo.tpl)

Good luck!

I just installed this theme on my gallery 2.2 installation! It looks fantastic!

However, I have one tiny problem I want to solve before I start tweaking it to match the rest of my site. Whenever I open an album, the image thumbnails inside all have the "item options" boxes open over the image. If I move the mouse over the image and off it again, it goes away. It's just after the page loads that it doesn't look right! See this image:

Any ideas what's doing this?

edit: it only seems to do this in IE6/IE7 and not firefox. It even does it on the demo pages in the first post in this thread. In this case only the item info pop-up appears as I guess guests don't have access to item options?:

Heh. well, that's not good. Yeah, being a mac guy my IE testing is a bit sporadic. I'm not set up to test in IE at home (and probably won't be for a few days). But...

I think this is probably caused by my initializing the drawers before the affected elements are fully loaded. I've just made a change to my demo gallery themes to use YAHOO.util.Event.onContentReady instead of YAHOO.util.Event.onAvailable. the former waits for the element's siblings to fully load before firing the events. Maybe this will do the trick. Can you tell me is this looks any better? http://photo.jacko.com/v/things/theme_demos/

If so, great. Turns out that onContentReady is new to the latest release of YUI, so the fix will involve upgrading the YUI Javascript libs too (which I just did). But that's probably a good thing.

hi,

Ok, I used the FLoatrix theme, and figured it out.
I used custom thumbnails. I havn't figured out how to get it to make thumbnails
like the ones I'm using yet. Maybe someone can create a rectangular plugin, like the square one in gallery2.

Thanks.

Ok, great. Two things:
(1) replace the all yahoo libs that are here <your-gallery>/libs/yui with ones you download from here: http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/ . You will need to dig around the that download to find all the right -min.js files.
(2) Around line 206 of the file templates/album.tpl in the debaser theme change YAHOO.util.Event.onAvailable to YAHOO.util.Event.onContentReady. You'll want to do the same thing in templates/photo.tpl as well.

That's it! Good luck.

OK, I changed the album.tpl file while downloading the yui files. There were two instances of YAHOO.util.Event.onAvailable, one related to the album and one related to the sidebar, so I just replaced both with YAHOO.util.Event.onContentReady. There was only one instance of .onAvailable in photo.tpl related to the sidebar, so I changed that one as well to .onContentReady, just in case!

Without even replacing any of the yui files this seems to have solved the problem!

Two other teeny tiny points:

1. Is there a way to set the size of thumbnails to a maximum width instead of width or height? I want to set my thumbnails to all be 250px, but in width only. Your template would work well with this option since images are in divs in columns and rows do not need to line up! But I think this would have to be a main program hack rather than a theme edit wouldn't it?

2. On the photo page there is a little plus sign under the photo. When I click it nothing appears to happen, except that I get a javascript error on the page!

Line: 216
Char: 1
Error: Object doesn't support this property or method.
Code: 0
URL: http://www.domain.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1224

That's all the info I can provide at the mo as I'm at work and only have IE6.

OK I lied, that doesn't seem to have fixed it! After changing the album.tpl and phot.tpl files and replacing all the yui files, my images are still covered by the item properties menu on first load!

Dammit I thought it was solved!

edit: OK what's weird is that it seems to not happen to public folders that anybody can access, such as your link above. It only happens when I go into personal albums that are restricted to registered users.

OK I'm R-tarded! I was changing the template/album.tpl file but forgot I had a template/local/album.tpl file as well!

OK so it really is fixed now, promise!

OK, no I did lie. It's not fixed... sorry! Although your demo pages do seem to work, so you must have done something else? I deleted the theme and started again, I uploaded the 0.9.2 version, updated the yui files, and applied the changes you made above to the album.tpl and photo.tpl files. However I still get the item actions boxes open when the page loads. However:

http://photo.jacko.com/v/things/theme_demos/
This page seems to have been fixed and works fine.

http://photo.jacko.com/v/things/
This page doesn't work.

Any other ideas?

Hey Chris,

I tried your theme and I wanted to provide some feedback. But first, congratulation on winning the theme contest & thank you for working on and developing this amazing theme! I like its photo focus, simplicity and slick look.

I installed your new theme to give it a try and here are a few things I noticed.

Larger image examples can be found here : http://curiosityconcept.com/debaser/ - my Gallery I installed your theme on @ http://curiosityconcept.com/gallery/

- Hover area over photos: EXIF comment hover disappears when you mouse over the photo. I hover the mouse over the little "+" icon under the image and the EXIF will pop up, comments too, But when I move the mouse up to click on "details" for the EXIF or to respond to a comment it slides back down before I can click on it. This also happens if I click (not just hover over) the "+"
It can also be a problem on items like http://curiosityconcept.com/gallery/experimental/DSC00642.jpg.html which are small but have EXIF and comments to display. I suppose the easiest thing would be to make all my photo items of a larger size? Is there away to add a separate area to bring up comments? (And as you noted: I tested in IE and the fade over doesn't appear to work at all in that browser.)

- Blocks: Any blocks I choose in Admin area show up in the hover over on the picture. If you ad things such as search, ratings, comments, etc. It gets way to busy and also (see comment above on) can't be clicked on after it hovers over. It would be nice maybe to have an area to the right or left of the image that could bring up the comments etc upon hover over or something.

- Side bar transparency: When I click "show sidebar" the first time it slides onto the screen semitransparent and can make the random image and text difficult to read.

When I click on "show sidebar" again it slides onto the screen and is not transparent.

- Hover area float: When you hover over an image the area which shows, date, views etc comes up. However if you move the mouse off and back on again it seems to bump the area where they hover over starts, so sometimes it will stop in the middle of an image.

Also noticed that sometimes this can get in the way of being able to click on an item or album. I noticed this on smaller sized thumbnails and the "panoramaz" album on your site.

- Image owner: Even though image owner is unchecked in theme settings it still shows up on photo page. http://curiosityconcept.com/gallery/experimental/DSC02237.jpg.html Would also be nice to add or remove other things, such as views, date, etc.

- Text color: Some of the text is difficult to read. Most notably in admin type areas. I did notice on your site, not the demo one, but http://photo.jacko.com/v/things/ I had a hard time reading the text on the hover overs.

I am using the latest version of FireFox and here's the stuff from Gallery2:

I also have a few quick questions on your site (http://photo.jacko.com/v/things/). I also like the way your thumbnails are not square. Mine on my site are all 150x150 square, and I am trying to figure out how to just resize them from the original image maintaining aspect ratio. My site still feels sort of grid like because of all the square images. On your site did you upload custom thumbnails to accomplish this or am I missing some configuration area?

Also a quick note on embedding. I did try this theme embedded with WordPress & WPG2 and it responded similar to Matrix theme as far as shrinking the overall gallery & text to fit in a wrapped frame. Works best at full browser width. Functionality wise it seemed to work great.

Thanks again so much! You did an excellent job!

Jon

There's a plugin called "square thumbnails", just deactivate or uninstall it!

Well, that's kinda weird. Especially the part about working for one of my albums and not the other, since they're both using the same version of the debaser theme. Ok, so the good news is I just got Windows running in the Parallels VM, and I am able to reproduce the issue you are having. I'll poke around tonight. It seems intermittent, which is annoying.

Hi Jon, thanks for this great feedback. Let's see...

Quote:
- Hover area over photos: EXIF comment hover disappears when you mouse over the photo.

Indeed. This theme requires that you can move faster than light. I'll have to fix this for the next release :).

Yea, because I'm not one for all the extra stuff I never found a place for it. It needs to go outside the photo somewhere.

Quote:
- Side bar transparency: When I click "show sidebar" the first time it slides onto the screen semitransparent and can make the random image and text difficult to read.

First, I guess it's a bug that it's only semi-transparent the first time. Regardless, it might make sense to just make it opaque, or at least the part with the optional blocks.

Yea, I've noticed this. Some sort of javascript race-condition. Needs a little more work.

Yea, small thumbnails don't do so well with this theme. I don't know a way around this without popping the drawer outside of the photo, which violates the debaser design aesthetic. The old version of the theme popped the drawer down, beneath the photo. Maybe I'll have to make that an option.

Indeed, I guess only the thumbnails are honoring that setting. A bug. Good idea about the other stuff.

Yea, I haven't spent any time at all making the admin pages look good, and the colors need work. I'd be stoked if people tweaked my colorpacks as well.

Yea, like was just mentioned your square thumbnails are a result of a plugin that you have installed. Just turn it off, and regenerate all your thumbnails.

Yea, one of my goals is to integrate a gallery into my WP blog. But it will probably not be debaser.

So, thanks again for the feedback. I'm heading out on vacation for a week and a half, so I probably won't be making any updates for a couple weeks. Cheers!

Hello,

This is an awesome theme !!!
I would like to make it as accessible as possible. When I turn off javascript, I can't access the menu anymore. Maybe you could do something about it.
You probably know that best ajax services are accessible without js (gmail for example).

Can you tell me if you intend to do this ?
Thank you

Thank you. I didn't even notice this plugin. For any who go to do this. You have to disable the plugin and then I had to go do "edit album" for the main album and have it rebuild all thumbnails and for subalbums. For some reason rebuilding from the "site admin" area didn't rebuild non-square thumbs.

Glad the feedback was appreciated. I'll take note of any other things I notice as I try out the theme. Thanks again. Enjoy your vacation!

Hi,

I love the new theme, but would echo some of the remarks above about small thumbnails. I'm also getting smarty errors that would appear to be related the this theme - I do not get the same errors with the stock gallery2 themes.

[03-Apr-2007 13:08:28] PHP Notice: Undefined index: class in /export/www/myhost.com/g2data/smarty/templates_c/%%2475614952/%%B5^B51^B51FF10D%%ItemLinks.tpl.php on line 20

I'm also seeing a lot more sleeping mysql connections than before, but cannot say it this is related or not.

Thanks again for a great theme!
