I know I have .htaccess setup at the root level of the hosting provider as I've already have it set with several directives. I've copied an empty version into the gallery sub-directory. But when I run the setup it warns me that Apache is not obeying my .htaccess file. I don't believe my provider will change the httpd.conf as recommended as this would require a restart (I think) of the server. Any recommendations? Can I access the root version from within Gallery? Is there a way to specify the path?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't worry about that warning. It's just a warning. You won't be able to use mod_rewrite functionality, but it's not that big of a deal (only provides shorter URLs) and your host probably doesn't have it installed.

The only way to add extra directives to the .htaccess file in your Gallery directory is to add them to a parent directory (Apache looks for .htaccess files in the parent directories, also) or add these directives in httpd.conf. Though you can add your directives after you run the Gallery configuration, they will get overridden if you ever need to re-run the configuration wizard.
