I am running gallery-1.5.3-cvs-b10 and have switched to Square thumbs. The issue is that the "edit thumbnail" only has options for portrait and landscape, not for square.

When I use the edit thumbnail option it simply adds whitespace.

thanks

Well,

the square thumbs in an option for an album. So you can make ALL thumbs of an album squared.

Figured it out, the issue is not that the thumbnails don't work, it's that the default Aspect Ratio is "As Image" not based on the configuration of Gallery. Simply need to select 1:1 (Square) and it works. I have heard other people complaining that editing square thumbs do not work, so it seems that it's just a interface issue (or a PICNIC if you want to call it that)
