Suggestion: Custom fields using existing (no G2-)tables

The Custom Fields module stores all options per field in one cell in a table in the database. This works fine with short lists which contain no special characters. But having extremely long lists of eg. species of plants/animals or lists of locations it's no use. I wonder, is it possible to include an existing (no G2) table with a lot of records (hundreds or thousands) to be displayed as options for Custom Fields. We already have a table containing the list. Now we want to use this table as a custom field. Did anyone try this? If no, consider this as a request for an alternate Custom Fields module.

we're aware that the current design isn't optimal and once we have time or a user submits a patch we'll change it such that each value has it's own table row.
using external tables with g2 can be problematic, at least i guess we'll much more likely redesign our current customfields implementation than offering a GUI to let g2 use external database tables.
of course you can do that for your installation, but it probably won't be on our development roadmap.

ps: please use the forum search function. this has been discussed before.

Thx Valliant,

for the quick answer. I'll go searching for a coder who can do this for us.

About the ps: I did but I didn't run into a topic that discusses this issue. If you know the topic please link it in a reply.
