Turn on any many formats as possible

I'd like to turn on as many supported file formats as possible, and enable thumbnails for as many as possible. I'd ideally like a list of where to go for help with each format, i.e. it took me a while to get from "my pdf's don't show up" to "I've gotta install some version of ghostscript and then configure it in imagemagick in some particular way." Hopefully someone can link me to a simple (at least straightforward) guide to turning on every possible format, with thumbnails?
