Virtualave installation possible?

I'm using Virtualave (or Hypermart or Go2Net or whatever they are this week) for my webhost (I even pay for it). They claim to have good PHP support and all the rest, and I've had no problems with Perl scripts so far so I had high hopes for Gallery.

Netcraft reports that my site is running:
Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) FrontPage/5.0.0.0 mod_ssl/2.8.10 OpenSSL/0.9.6a on FreeBSD

As I have no shell access, I followed the instructions for FTP-only installation, including the CHMOD steps. I made sure that .htaccess and other files were uploaded as ASCII instead of Binary. When I go to http://andysocial.com/gallery/setup I get the following error:

/data1/va/andysocial.com/gallery/setup/.htaccess: Invalid command 'php_value', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

When I removed the line with "php_value" I got the next error:

/data1/va/andysocial.com/gallery/setup/.htaccess: Invalid command 'php_flag', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

So, has anyone gotten a Gallery to work on Virtualave, or should I give up?

As NetCraft reports it, it don't seem to have PHP (mod_php) installed. Also the error message you get: "defined by a module not included " seems too indicate that the PHP module is not installed on your "server".

And when I checked virtualave's website, only the "Advanced Hosting" option (and above) includes php. I guess you use the free hosting service? If so, your out of luck, no PHP for you.

No free hosting for me, nope.

I have their advanced hosting package, which supposedly includes PHP, Perl, and so on. Of course, their promo pages are inaccurate about other things - they claim POP support erroneously. I've put a support request into VA to see if they actually have the PHP support they advertise or not.

Hmm, not good. As far as the page I could find (The one on hypermart) you SHOULD have PHP included in your account. Since that's clearly not the case, KICK SOME A**

Bait and switch comes to mind.

According to the Virtualave <!-- BBCode Start --><A HREF="http://www.virtualave.net/t/registration/packageinfo" TARGET="_blank">package info page</A><!-- BBCode End -->, I should have PHP, POP3, and so on for my $99/year. That is the page as it was when I signed up almost two years ago. According to the tech support guys at VA, that page is inaccurate. I've pointed out the POP3 inaccuracy to them months ago, and they don't bother to fix it. Instead, they just say that I should pay twice as much to get what they claim the normal paying customer gets. WTF...

Downtown Host is looking good...

I've checked the site, it seems not installed by default to your webhosting plan. You may request to install other php modules.

good luck to you and let me know how will I be able to assist you.
