I've been reading the forum messages and wonder if
someone can reccomend the best highest performance
way to allow website visitors view (without any security) the images spread out over 1000 folders on a shared host website.
I'd like to keep things as simple as possible and I
am looking for a way around creating thumbnails
and writing html for the thumbnail gallery displays for all the photos in the galleries.
I have all the jpg files in the separate folders on
the website and was looking for a product that
could automate the gallery generation and menu
creation showing all the folders as menu name items.
As Gallery2 performance seems to be burdened with
a lot of impressive ( but not needed in my case )
features, I was wondering if by chance Gallery1 might
be recommended. If Gallery1 were the better fit
is it already orphaned and not receiving support
in the future or going to be enhanced in any way
( other than Gallery2 development) ?
Thanks
Scott

Gallery 1 starts to perform poorly with that many images and albums so I would recommend against it. We are still working on it a little bit, but not nearly as much as Gallery 2. Gallery 2 is much better and if you like, you can disable most of the features that slow it down.

If its fairly static, why not use some script which generates the thumbnails and html? If raw speed is what you are after, a full application to take care of this might not be what you need..

You don't really state your goals very well. Will these 10,000 images in 1,000 folders *ever* change? Will you be adding new ones frequently? All this will be very important. If they never change, you'd be better off which some script that will create static html pages and take care of the *one-time* creation of the thumbs. It'd be super fast and since you don't ever add any pics, pretty easy too.

But G2 has been used by care2 to host something like 1 million pictures with 5,000 users or something. So if you'll be adding more and more pictures and maybe not just you, maybe you have lots of users adding lots and lots of pictures... than G2 might be what you are looking for.
