While updating the fr.po files, I noticed a few things that require attention :

Module rearrange
In "Change the order of the items in this album.%s Click an item to move, then click the new location.", the "%s" is used to insert a <br>, which is not XHTML compliant.
This string should be cut in two strings.

Module comments
The module is displayed as "Comments" in the left column in the Admin page, whichever is the activated language.

Module hidden
The good old trick to factorize action is used : "Hide %s"... As previously discussed, it only works in english ("Hide photo", "Hide album"...).
This should be replaced by "Hide photo", "Hide album", and so on as it was done for "Edit photo" instead of "Edit %s"...

I haven't finished to update fr.po files, but I still suspect there are more glitches to fix...

1. we insert a <br/> not a <br>. it's in a <p> paragraph. why is it not XHTML compliant? <p> is a valid parent class. http://learningforlife.fsu.edu/webmaster/references/xhtml/tags/text/br.cfm#parent_child
2. keeping a single long string makes sense since it makes the context more obvious.

thanks. fixed in cvs.

can you add a link to the previous discussion. this works in German too... but i see that the translations achieved with this method are probably not very precise / adequate.

1 - Yup... In fact I used "View source" within FireFox, I know remember that the source is slightly modified before being displayed.

I understand keeping a long sentence might ease the understanding, however, when translating, I wondered "WTF is this %s for?"... So I tested, and looked for this string once installed to view what the %s was remplaced with. It was not obvious at first sight that a <br /> was going to be inserted... I thought that another piece of sentence was going to be inserted.

Also, I remember that the po files are not sorted anymore. If you cut this string in two pieces, then they should be together in the po file.
As far as I am concerned, it is easier for me to translate short sentences that longer ones with %s used for non obvious reasons.

3 - Check this topic:

There are similar broken up sentences regarding the new Reposiory feature in Core module. Like "As of the last update on" which I assume will be appended with some date time string. And ", the repository contains..." which I think will be appended to something else. This is assuming the translators know how the programmer was thinking and happen to use the same grammar as English again.

Also, there are some Unix shell commands in the localization file, too. Like "$ cd %s" and "$ chmod 777 %s". I am not sure those command should ever be translated. If not, they should be removed from the translation files.

Most if not all of the new modules do not have any po files in the CVS yet. I created some of them myself but don't know if the package name and version are correct. It also errors when I try to create po file for Picasa.

stephenju, broken up sentence fixed, unix commands un-marked for translation, some other cleanup in repository code.
Fixed picasa strings and added makefile for picasa/po directory.

for new po files just put:
Gallery: {module name} 1.0
for Project-Id-Version.. we don't track the actual version number in the po files, just 1.0

mindless, thanks for the quick fix. I just finished and uploaded translation based on CVS from 2 days ago. Will update and add the new items once the update is commited to CVS.

When will the test repository go live so we can check out the translation? It's kind of like shooting in the dark without even seeing the English text in live pages.

unfortunately downloadable plugins didn't make the cut for 2.1, so don't worry about those strings.. they'll remain inactive until 2.2

adding recent translation submissions now....

/cvsroot/gallery/gallery2/modules/publishxp/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES

I've found a few more untranslatable strings:
In the "Edit Album" page, "Album" tab:

Order: "Apply to all subalbums"
Theme: " Use this theme in all subalbums"
Thumbanils: "Use this thumbnail size in all subalbums"
Resized pictures: "Use these target sizes in all subalbums"
Size Limit: "Use these size limits in all subalbums"
Rating: "... and for all subalbums"
