Looking forward to testing G2 with a LOT of images (50,000 or more perhaps). I'm hoping the deployment of mysql and architectural changes will make this a possibility. Also wondering what would be involved or will G2 support the creation of static thumbnails (for faster loading).

You can play with the G2 framework today. Look for instructions in the -devel list's archives. There's a test case that automatically creates a gallery for you with the number of photos that you specify (ie "create me a random gallery with 5000 photos in it") and then browse it. It's far from complete, but it'll give you a taste of what's coming.
G1 requires static thumbnails. G2 also uses static thumbnails but they're cached and the cache can be flushed. This means you can say "Get rid of all the thumbnails and scaled images that haven't been viewed in the last 30 days".
G2 also provides a full security model for your images. They no longer have to be stored in the webserver's documentroot and you have true security.
