embed remote album? rsync mirroring with G2?

Is it possible to embed a remote album (from another gallery2 site) into a different gallery2 installation on another webserver without duplicating the content? My situation is one where a family has multiple installations but in some cases want to mirror specific albums without the need to copy all the data. On a vaguely related theme, does the rsync trick to mirror an entire gallery to a remote server with faster bandwidth work with g2? no, but you can add a link to the other g2.
http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:UserContributions#Modules -> linked items module.
g2 doesn't have mirroring yet.
