Is this available already? I had a look at Captcha but it didn't seem to exactly fit the bill...

image verification? please describe what you understand under the term "image verification".

captcha is used in g2 to prevent bots to add an account on your g2 / post spam.
soon, captcha will also be used for the comments module.

captcha is a means to verify that the user is human, not an automated script.

What I'm in interested in is a means to present users with a captcha style code prompt for access to every item in specific areas of my gallery. I have a main gallery of pictures that regularly gets mass downloaded by users with download managers but I'd like to also add a selection of movies and I'd prefer to make them as inaccessible to non-humans as resonably possible...

while preserving user-friendlyness and usability for humans i hope :)

adding captcha to visit each item is surely a pita for the user. once you know where and when exactly you want to add something like captcha, we can think of ways to add it there.
maybe a similar approach to the upcoming ads module could be used.
the ads module will not only replace 1 or more thumbs in album views with ads, it also randomly intercepts clicks. e.g. when you click on a thumbnail in an album view to view the full size, you'll get redirected to an ads page, then you have to click continue and you'll get to see the full size photo. and this doesn't happen everytime you click on a thumb, but randomly. so on each click there's a 1 : 10 chance or whatever that you have to look at an ad page before viewing the full size photo.
