Hi all, new here, looking forward to using your program. Looks to be a great thing

On my installation, however, I am having an issue seeing my .htaccess file after uploading it to my gallery directory. It's just not there! I searched a bit and found this post (http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpBB_14&file=index&action=viewtopic&topic=3731&15771), that person seemed to have resolved their issues but I am still having the same problem. No matter what I do, I cannot see that .htacess file. Please help

Thanks in advance.

This is a case of your FTP client hiding dot files. See you client documentation on how to unhide these files.

I've readup on how to do such a thing (using Flash FXP) and still cant see the file.

This is what my ftp client said:

TYPE I
200 Type set to I.
PASV
227 Entering Passive Mode (209,202,156,231,186,25)
STOR .htaccess
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for .htaccess
226 Transfer complete.
Transferred: .htaccess 0 bytes in 0.11 (1.00 KBps)

but, cant see anything

any other way?
Thanks

I've tried three diferent clients, ws_ftp, flashFXP, and CuteFTP and still, I cannot see that file. I've read up on all the hel files on how to unhide dot files and for some reason, I'm not having any luck

Anyone else have an FTP client that they think might work for me? Or is there another way to see that file?

Glad the FTP client works for you,I like it,but rarely use a windoze machine,so I dont use it too often.

Try just creating a /setup directory and upload the files needed and make sure the permissions are set accordingly on each then after you configure the gallery set the file permissions on the /setup directory to 0 or atleast take world read off of it

I'll have to call my host on Monday. Not only won't it let me upload/ see the "setup" folder, but I can't even create another folder and rename it! I think it might just be my host and some permissions. Unless you think it might be something else.

Thanks

They could be having some problems....what are the permissions set to on your /public_html or /html directory?

I dont have a directory named that, and all my files are all in the / directory so I dont know what my host has set for my permissions.

Yes, contact your host. Nick, the FTP server can chroot you without the webserver doing the same -- usually FTP clients use chroot unless it's for some strange reason -- this doesn't mean the web server does the same.

If you can't create a setup folder, you'll need to ask your host to remove it so that you can.

Yes,I know the FTP server is what chroots you,I have my FTP server set to chroot my users into there /home not there /home/public_html but can easily be done, which is probably what his host has done to him, thats why all he can see is /

I have a feeling he's just gonna have to contact his ISP  Let's hope they are the responsive kind.

Yes, bizland is very responsive and helpful. I must admit, they are a bit better than the company they bought, my old host (11net.net).

Here is the conversation I've been having...

Me:

Quote:
I am trying to install a program called "Gallery" (...a web based photo album viewer/creator.) on your server under my account and am having some interesting issues.

When installing the program according to the instructions (see link, http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gallery/gallery/README?rev=HEAD&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup instruction number 3) I cannot upload the "setup" directory. I can't create a directory named "setup" either, very strange. Also, I occasionally have problems seeing the .htaccess file (but I think that had something to do with my FTP client and seeing hidden files, not sure).

Is it a permissions issue? Any ideas/ comments? I'd like to use it for myself and my family, as well as offer it to my clients in the future.

Bizland:

Quote:
I would like to inform you that I was able to create the setup folder in your account with out any error using FTP. Please take care not to edit or overwrite the .htaccess file in the root, it may cause errors in your site. In Unix systems the hiddenfiles are the files starting with "." so .htaccess is hidden file. You canot see it via FTP but you can download it by doing a Manualget in Cute FTP. If you have any questions please letme know along with the error messages if there is any while creating the files.

I responded to them asking them to move that file to the "gallery" directory. They were able to create the "setup" directory, but created it in my root directory and not the "Gallery" directory. lol, I can't even move that folder to the "gallery" directory for some reason. I also asked them to give me permission to be able to do all this without having to email them every time I need to change something in gallery. What a pain in the ass! lol

Any more feedback? Why am I seemingly the only person having troubles getting this to work?

Thanks for all your help so for

They might have just set the permissions that way, cuz he did mention this..."Please take care not to edit or overwrite the .htaccess file in the root, it may cause errors in your site".

I emailed them with that screen shot you posted, also waiting to hear back from them from yesterdays email. I'll keep you posted. I hope we can get this thing working.
