I have an outstanding host with very good technical support. ICQing with the head techie yesterday getting some details of Image Magic working he saw I was running Gallery and was very negative about it - the criticism being that it is notorious for taking down servers when being used for working large batches of images which are already on the server. I respect the guy, I have no idea how much of a problem this might be (perhaps none, perhaps a problem from the past), thought I would mention it here.

Maybe he could specify a little more exactly what the problem is. Gallery does use a package like ImageMagick or NetPBM, but it shouldn't be an extreme slowdown to the server. It does generate many different sizes of images -- too many some might argue -- but solutions have been posted in the customization forums.
Please have your host be a little clearer about the problem.

Hi joyoflinux
It's not so much a problem as some feedback on perceptions that might be out there amongst the hosting community. What he told me was that it was well known (?) that "Gallery's" (he did know the app) gallery creation, when run on large numbers of images (for example I have been doing it on directories with 1,000 100K images and also on directories with say 100 images of 300K) could crash a server. I imagine it is the ImageMagick copying / resizing that is the culprit if there is one. Of course hosts are always uincomfortable when you make their boxes do a lot more work than just serving html pages
