New Icon Pack

Here is new icon pack for gallery2. It derives from the work of Paul Armstrong. Every icon is in PNG format with a real Alpha channel, which render beautifully with any theme. However, IE has trouble with PNGs from CSS and the transparency looks wrong. The icons are best viewed in Firefox. Here is a link to the new icon pack I have only tested thes icons under G2B3. They may not work with the changes in the CVS edition. The icons are released under GPL, so feel free to redistribute them. Comments are always appreciated. |

First, let me say, those icons look great!
After getting a lesson on tranparency and browsers, it would probably be best to just use GIFs. IE can't handle alpha channel tranparency only binary. Which you could create binary transparent PNGs, however, all GIF only uses binary transparency. Then it would work better across all browsers.
However, your account_settings.png appears to be corrupt. It's 52KB, doesn't have the correct PNG header and I'm unable to open it with Irfanview or The GIMP. I assume this is the format of which ever program you used to create these icons though. Maybe mentioning what program was used in the README.txt would be helpful or seeing if you can export the originals to a more common format like PSD in case others want to build off of your work.
The README.txt still refers to Paul's site and designs. I also noticed that you have icons.css and icons.css~. I assume icons.css~ is a temporary file created by your css editor.
I assume you're just following Paul's path and this is no cut on your or anyone, just a general observation. Why have any icons refer to any theme directly? Both yours and Paul's refer to the Matrix theme directly for 3 icons. I would think that an iconpack should have all the icons it needs and not need to rely on any theme.
For example, what if someone created their own theme, but wanted to use someone else's iconpack and also wanted a really trimmed down gallery install. So they removed the Matrix theme?
Great work! I like those icons a lot!

Thank you so much for your comments, suggestions, and ideas!
I have corrected several errors and the original post now links to an updated file.
o Corrected account_settings.png
o Deleted the two temp files that got included in the archive
o Removed dependency on matrix theme by adding two icons
o Added info to README.txt including info about obtaining originals
On PNGs versus GIFs. I have the luxury of living in a happy world where 95% of my user base uses firefox. I know most people don't have the freedom of design that I have. The reason I made this icon set was that I wanted an icon set with real transparency. I have been using g2 for about ~72 hours, and I am spending a lot of time working on a themes. I contemplated putting out a .GIF icon set with binary transparency, and will do so if there is demand. Maybe someday IE will start taking standards seriously
:-?
Thanks again for your comments, suggestions, and kind words.

Is there possibly a set of icons in GIF format? I use IE and most of my visitors do the same!
Thanks!

Sure, I will work on it this evening. I will make a set with a white background for the partial transparency. If you want I will make one just for you with your background color in the partial transparency. Just tell my what the # code is and I will compile it for you.
I am working on a program that will take a whole group of png's and replace the alpha-channel with a solid background. If anyone know of any good documentation on the PNG file format I'd appreciate it.

Thanks KSturgis for the kind effort! Appreciate that.
In fact, I found that the icons look bad whenever I try to change the color pack to another color theme, including all the stand color pack like black, blue, blue bottle, etc...
Is it possible to have a set of icon with transparency to fit into all those colors? Thanks!

nice work, but the Captcha icon dont work to good with the black color pack

Here is an all gif version of the icon pack. This package will look best over a background that is white, or near white.
If gonna fool around with the icon pack on a dark background tommorow, I don't know how well it will work out, but it is worth a try.

This version is missing a capthcha icon, but only the administrator gets to see that icon, so I've put it on a low priority.
enjoy,

Thanks! I'll try that~

Hi KSturgis,
Love the icon pack. Just following the above thread and was wondering if there was any more progress on true transparent GIFs for your icon pack (for those still using IE - I know, I know, when will they learn ;). I've been flipping through deciding on PGTheme and the Grey Matter colour pack for my site but given that both are similarly dark, the icons aren't showing up quite right in IE.
Many thanks

KSturgis, I don't know about the program you use, but I know in PS and several other programs if you either turn off the background layer or select the background layer to be transparent when you save it as a GIF, then the background is truely transparent and not just transparent for certain colors.

nivekiam - Transparent GIFs only have 1 level of transparency. On or off. This means that imagery which doesn't have hard edges (drop shadows for instance) will have to contain some background colour in the gif for the transparency to look right. However, as KSturgis has released a PNG set people will be able to make transparent GIF versions for whatever colour they desire.

Why exactly is it that nobody inserted the IE hack into the css so transparant png's are shown correctly? I've never used it myself, but I know it exists...
I found another one I didn't know of: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bobosola/index.htm

Good idea RwD,
Is there a best "master" location in the gallery code (in each theme? higher up?) to insert the fix? Part of my confusion with the code (being fairly noob) is that I can rarely find the best or most efficient places to put overriding hack code. If you (or anyone else?) can point to the best location, I can try to figure out what of the various examples of code should go there.
Cheers!

The gallery code allows you to insert stuff in the head element, though I am not sure how to do this (haven't loked at that part yet). Inside themes it is very easy though; just add the suggested code into the head element.
(When you change standard themes, please look at the comments at the top of those files. It tells you to copy the files to a subdirectoy called local in the same location and edit the file in there)

shapiroja, RwD is on the right path. You'd edit theme.tpl of your theme where you can add a new link to a custom css file, or you could just add. There is no "master" place to make these changes for all themes as there was before beta 4 as now each theme can control all visual and layout aspects of G2.
Great suggestions RwD!

This is very interesting indeed. The quick and dirty fix I do in The GIMP is indexing the png at the 255 colors... this is the dirty part of the fix.

Unfortunate thing though is that the person making this didn't also suport css included images... but I believe you can "easily" fix that with css and some filter.

Either way please start a new topic, your question isn't on topic to this thread and if someone else went looking for it they wouldn't find it. Be specific in your subject to about a new icon for RSS feeds.

just lemme report that the mentioned pngfix for IE does _not_ work flawlessly..
it makes my pngs distorted a bit, and blured a _lot_
although they look nice in FF.
so far not perfect...
check the attached picture!
i recommend using it only with specified images with setting onload="fixPNG(this)" on them (in the <img...> tag)

Hi
I seem to be missing something. I've tried to download the file above: http://sturgis.no-ip.org/KSIconsGIF.01.00.tgz
but it doesn't seem to open in WinZip or AlphaZip. I'm using Windows XP. Will these icons extract to my Win XP hard drive?
Regards
Colleens.

If you have trouble on windows with winzip: download the file, then rename it to end in .tar.gz instead of .tgz
Then open the file with winzip.
Extract into your gallery2 directory.

any interest in adding your iconpack to CVS? if so, update it for 2.1 and we can get it in.

Any new progress on this? I use an all black background and would love the new icons so they don't have those thin white borders...
Oh, and the link above to the new icons is not working.

don't worry, if you have 2.2-RC-1 then you already have it.. visit Site Admin / Icons and you'll see KSIcons.
