mambo - install from directory - does nothing

Hello all,

I'm embedding Gallery 1.5 on mambo 4.5.2.3. Installing Gallery 1.5 was not a problem, but the last step does not work.
The last step is "install from directory" with install-directory: /mamboroot/components/gallery/contrib/mambo

I click on install and nothing happens!
- extra info:
* if I use for install-directory: /complete/nonsense/ and click on install
also nothing happens-
* hmm nothing happens means that the install directory returns to its
default:
/mamboroot/administrator/components/com_installer/component ...

Can anybody please give an indication what is going wrong? I'm sorry if this is kind of vague...

ps. gentoo apache 2.0 server, no cgi, I've installed gallery with shell access...
