Displaying latest albums outside of gallery

I'm looking to display the latest albums from my gallery on the homepage of my site.
How would I go about creating a script that would read the album.dat files, and displaying the latest albums added?

I guess what i'm really asking, is... how is the information relating to the albums stored in the album.dat file?

Talk about bringing back an old topic... Ok the site I am working on uses Gallery v1, but inside of a members directory. It a paysite. Anyways the above discobug script is exactly what I want to be able to put on the regular frontpage (in the free area) showing the latest update. But I fear that since the script would be hosted in the members area it would ask for a password in order to display.

I am just curious if there was a way around this, maybe add something to an htaccess file that will allow the script/images through the password area.
