Is it possible to have the main page divided into different sections ( like family, travels, work, friends etc. )
For example something similar to http://siriux.net/photos/main.php but divided into categories instead of years.

yes, you can do anything you like, as demonstrated by the custom layout and theme nicokaiser built for siriux.net. you can find the code for this in G2 dev forum, stick topic for Demo Sites.. perhaps it will help you to build something similar.
