bogs down system completely

gallery2 has always been very, very slow. i always imagined it was more of the imagemagick bogging me down. system specs are: p3 450, 128mb pc100, 160gb seagate 7200 8mb. i'm thinking of buying two celeron 300's and running then at 450 or something like that (it's a dual cpu board), and adding some more ram. but still, it shouldnt be this bad.

so last night, i did a little stress test. i let it do a slideshow of my entire gallery on loop. and this morning, i wake up to see that httpd and mysqld both up and croaked.

then tonight, when i had 5 people browsing through my gallery, my load surged to 30 and is still in fact there right now. so of course, i can't intervene at all, and since i dont want to reboot, i have to wait and see if it fixes itself or something croaks again.

so in the meantime, the server is in all practicality, inoperable.

hmm. is there a way to downgrade to gallery1.5 or something like that and keep the same album structure, pictures, captions, etc?

it's been confirmed. eventually, the kernel killed mysqld and httpd

ziddey, we are currently making significant improvements to G2 everyday that will allow it to run faster and more efficient. Saying that, you also have a slightly underpowered box. If you plan to make it dual processors, that would help greatly, and I would also throw another 128 stick in there.

If you stick by us for a little longer, perhaps you will see these improvements and will be able to continue using G2.

If you have any specific ideas for speeding up G2, please let us know.

Nono, thank you. I didn't mean to come off as sounding demanding. I think that G2 is an amazing piece of work as it is and am very grateful for it.

Is there anyway for it to show an error message instead of bogging down the system in a scenario like this? I know it might be out of the realm of G2 and into httpd..

It's not that easy for G2 to internally detect this situation; you really are better off monitoring the load average and doing your own throttling externally. But when we fix the problem with thumbnails being very expensive to process, this problem will be greatly reduced...
