Using an already existing photo directory structure

Hi, first let me thank you guys for the excelent work with G2. Really a great piece of (programming) art.

I have a question concerning usability and migration from other existing products/setups.

Having a digital camera for over 3 years now, I've got to the habit of placing my images, organized by year/month/occasion on a directory structure in my hard disk. The full collection already makes 20 GBytes. I have carefully enriched the photos with exif style comments and so on, which was a clear choice for the existing JPG standard.

I would like to use gallery to make these pictures available to users on the internet and profit from the customizable interface and nice accessibility work. My problem is that I wouldn't like to put in all albums/photos by hand into gallery. What I would like to do is to tell gallery where my photos are and let gallery organize the pictures in albumns as they are in my folders.

I'm sure there must be a solution to this problem, since it seems to be the policy of every non-gallery user for digital photos so far: organize your albums in a directory structure. So, my question is: what is the best way forward and how much work would that mean?

Thanks a lot for any input,

Regards, André.

There's a change in the works which will allow you to recursively add your directories (even using symlinks instead of making copies) and maintain your directory structure as the album layout.

It was put on hold due to some other code changes, but I'll be working on it again tonight and it should be in the codebase by the time G2 Beta is released.

That is very good news. Thanks for that. I'll be waiting for the beta then. Does that imply in a lot of changes w.r.t. alpha4? Otherwise you could place the patch somewhere I could test -- if you think that would be interesting. I can make a simple test with a copy of part of my photo directories and give feedback to this dicussion.

Beta is vastly different from A4. (In fact, we advise people who want to test, to download from our nightly builds site instead of using A4.)
