Integrating Gallery2 with phpBB 2.0.11

I'm looking to integrate Gallery2 with phpBB 2.0.11 - has anyone done this? I've had a quick look through how phpBB authenticates users but seems far too complicated for me :/

both sites are on the same 2LD (x.n.com and y.n.com) however, are on different physical machines (both are able to access a central db however)

Why 2.0.11 ? 3.0 will come out soon ... and all work is wasted. I have started integration into 3.0.
