Dutch translation

Even though I have no problems reading english whatsoever I do want to set the interface language of the gallery to dutch. This because people viewing it will all be dutch and I assign someone administrator rights who is not happy with english.

The thing is though that the current Dutch translation sucks big time. Only partial translation is done if any at all. Some buttons and links are in Dutch but many parts are not translated at all.

Now, I would like to help with this and translate as much text as I can with the little spare time I have, but is this allready usefull as the project is not exactly done yet. I can imagine not much changing in the text structures so changes made will be valuable, but I can also imagine a lot might still change...

So, can someone let me know if translations are welcome and don't waste my time. And then also give me a short explaination about the lanuage system with the fuzzy stuff and all. (I believe fuzzy can leave when a translation is complete?)

In any case, I can't look at the system from where I am writing this, I am just hoping for a reply by the time I get home...

translations are absolutely welcome! see docs/LOCALIZING included with G2.

I'll give it a go. first thing I noticed is it doesn't seem to be straightforward editing of text files or db-records. In any case, I am going away now and will try in a few hours. If in the mean time somebody has any tips for doing this on a windows XP machine then those are welcome (I noticed you wrote it on a unix variant perspective).

If I have any questions or results I will post them in this thread...

It is not that I am lazy, it is that I have very little time why I didn't do anything about the translation jet. I did install cygwin to try to make the .mo files.

But basically it is not a really clear way of making the translations also because of the caching by smarty and stuff. How am I supposed to find out where the changes I make will occur? How will I know the context when the english label says "Next >>" (or something similair) when in the English .po file it is actually translated (into "next") Are there hints and tricks I need to get, or is it basically trial and error. The reason I'm asking is because I have little time to do it, so the quick and easy way to do this right, is the way I want to go :lol:

Anybody here ever worked with this cygwin to give some pointers on that?? I downloaded and installed it including 'make' but nothing else, perhaps I missed something, because my first try for making .mo files failed a bit :oops:

There are a couple of approaches. The first approach is to translate all the longer strings first since they have enough context for you to do them entirely. Most of the shorter strings are in the .tpl files so you can look through them to find out where they're used. If you're not sure, just don't translate them for now. Then when you see them in the UI you can always update the translation later. Remember that this is an iterative process .. you can do a little bit now and a little bit later and it will add up.

What errors did you get when you typed "make" ?
