"Upload Failed" problem

My gallery worked months ago and I hadn't accessed it for a few months until today. Now everything works except uploading pictures. Some things changed during the time when I didn't use my gallery including the version of the operating system (Mac OSX) installed and the version of the web server software (WebSTAR 4D) installed. Both were upgraded. I realize Gallery is designed to work with Apache but it previously worked fine with WebSTAR 4D on my server. Here are the details of what happens when I try to upload a picture: When I try to upload using the "Add Photo" command in Gallery itself there is absolutely no response from Gallery. The Add Photo window never disappears, and no window appears saying the photo is being uploaded. When I try to upload using Gallery Remote v1.4.1, an upload window appears. Next to "Transferring," the number of KB transferred begins to rise, then, oddly, it falls, then it begins to rise again as if the transfer is failing and restarting again and again. After a few seconds the error "Upload failed" appears, yet the rising, falling, and rising again of the number of KB tranferred continues. In the "Errors" section of this window it says "test1.jpg: Error: Server contacted, but Gallery not found at this URL (http://216.168.63.95/WebGalllery/gallery/gallery_remote2.php)." Can you please give me some ideas about how to get this working again? I put a test album up with upload permissions for everyone so you can try it out yourself. I have remote access to the server through Timbuktu and am able to configure things there as well as to have on-site tech support work on the server for me if you have suggestions about what could be done. By the way maybe you already know that at the moment (1-10-05, afternoon) the search functions in the forum don't seem to be working. I did read the documentation and faq for Gallery, but when I try to search the forum I get a couple of "General Error" responses including "Could not obtain forum_name/forum_id" so unfortunately I might be asking a redundant question... please don't flame me; it's not my fault I can't find it in the forum. Thanks! Les May ---- |

FAQ Gallery:c.31 - try a form based upload and post the debug results.
As for the searching issues, we are aware of the fact that this forum is overloaded at times. We are working on fixing it, thanks for the report!

I didn't have time to get back to troubleshooting this issue until today. Oddly, the problem with uploading photos has, um, fixed itself over the last month. Not getting the errors I was getting, and any size uploads up to the max I set works fine. I haven't changed anything on the server, though others may have. Nobody else was troubleshooting this particular issue on the server other than me.
I also realized that I wasn't getting the expected feedback from Gallery when uploading pictures because ... *laughs at self*... I recently turned on the "block popup windows" option in my web browser. Still have no idea why the uploads were crapping out in both web browser interface and gallery remote application in the past. Hopefully this issue was related to some temporary problem with the server or my internet connection and will not recur.

EsalenInstituteISDept, most likely your host screwed up and have fixed it now.

EsalenInstituteISDept, where do you set the max file size for uploads? i'm wondering if that's what is tripping me up with errors uploading files. when i use the "Add photo" link, the window pops up, i browse to the file i want to upload, click "Upload" and watch as the browser window tries to do it's work, then i get a "File not found" error in the little window i was using to upload files. i'm wondering if my image is too large for a setting i had.
many thanks,
pete

I haven;t done that step in quite awhile so I don;t remember well, but to the best of my memory there is a place in the gallery setup page you see in your web browser while configuring gallery where you can set the max size of uploads. Don't quote me on that. But try it yourself, just go through the setup process as described in the gallery documentation and then look for a max size option you can set somewhere during that process. I have heard that max upload size can also be set in paramaters for the server itself and this could affect gallery. So it could be something to do with Apache or WebStar 4D settings or settings for whatever server technology you're using. Good luck!
