Thumbnail applet?

Hi.. I didn't know where else to post this question, so here it goes: Is there a way to use the applet that comes in gallery for making thumbnails in my own separate application? Specifically, I'm developing a content management system in php, and I would like to use the thumbnail-making applet to create thumbnails dinamically for the news and articles I upload to my site.
