image resize probs

I am trying to limit the amount of waisted bandwidth is being used on my server by restricting the size of images that can be uploaded onto the site. Currently I resize all images to 640, 800, and 1024, and would not like to keep the origional if it exceeds that. It would be great if the client can resize the image beforehand so it would restrict bandwidth that much better.

I have set up, from my main gallery all the correct info, 640, 800, and 1024, but it doesn't want to apply to all sub albums. If I try to upload using gallery remote, it will not resize anything above 640 even when I use the "use gallery defaults" option. If I don't use that, then we run into the bandwidth problem again.

Is there anyone that has run into the same probs out there that may be able to guide me further.
