Hi, im interest by a french version of GAllery 2...
I saw the LOCALISATION file but am not sure witch po file to edit to be sure to make it correctly...
and i want to know if someone else begin to work on this french translation... I looked on the cvs on sourceforge but find nothing there...
what is the procedure to be sure to work all together... to make things go further correctly...
BTW... what about the gettext installed? is it supposed to work in some language by now... because i only got english no mather if a chose another language...

it seems we wrote the doc too complicated for non experienced users.
So i would be happy if we can work together and tweak this.
i also think we should do this here in Forum so other user can participate.
i suggest you just start from the top and tell what you not understand.
i also made a WIKI page.
If you register, we will give you permission to edit it also.
Does this sounds like a plan ?

yes your plan sound good for me...
but i want to advice u... that my first language is french...that why i need translation ;), so i'll make efforts... and sorry for my english mistake...
first i read the LOCALING page... i understand most of it... I think...
so i went to the fr.FR.po in $/module/core/po ... is this the good file to edit??? then I try to edit it and then a did make install ... trying to create my .mo files...
but i thinks i did something wrong cause change not appearing...
where im confuse... is
The fuzzy keyword tells you that the translation of the block is
incomplete. But once that you update the administration entries, you
can remove the "#, fuzzy" line to allow the translation to compile
later on.
I want to understand how to proceed for one change... then i'll do the rest...
let's try to change... "most viewed image" by "image la + populaire"
...

Yes .. I've wanted to have a translation module for some time now. I don't know that it would be all that difficult to write. Any volunteers?

I had very little trouble following your instructions. The place that got me was using gettext. Teading the manual on the gnu page is tiresome.
After playing with poedit, kbabel, and gtranslator, I finally settled on yudit (www.yudit.org) Its very lightweight and its a quick install since it does not need gtk, gtk2 or qt libs.
It would therefore help to talk programs that the translators can use to do the bulk of the work.
Another thing that got me was 'gmake'. I use a linux box and it is just make. It had me confused for a few minutes before I understood.
Another thing that needs to be stressed is that in Step 3 the default values _HAVE_ to be changed for things like charset, encoding etc otherwise 'make' will throw an error.
Also could you add a section or link on plurals. I left the default values for plurals and make gave me an error. I then copied the values for plural from another po file and I was able to compile successfully.
These are my experiences as a complete newbie playing with the translation thing.
I am working on a tamil (ta_IN) translation. I will send my files once I have a decent amount done.

It will probably be helpful it there's a easier way to make translations, I intended to make a translation but gave up after I couldn't find all the tools for Windows (specifically, gmake) and I don't have access to a *nix shell...

I agree. It's a little difficult, still. If you install cygwin it'll give you all the tools you need. But we'll make it simpler in the future, when we have time.
