Now that I am up and running, I have a few notes:
Good -
1. I like the clean look and some of the new features, such as random image.
2. Album migration worked fine on all my albums, although it took a while, with only the brower progress feedback.
3. I love the movie additions.
Bad -
1 - It seems slow, at least much slower than G1.
2 - The permissions capability and management is terrible. It is hard to understand, and doing simple tasks such as making an album visible is tough to figure out.
3 - reorder was strange, but then I might be used to G1

I agree it does seem slower.

It is definitely slower than G1, especially if you have less than a few thousand photos. The overhead of getting the database involved is not trivial. However, the one main place where performance bites us right now is in the code that loads thumbnails, that is still about 2x too slow. I've got several tricks up my sleeve for that, though -- stay tuned.
The permission system in G2 is very powerful. We have not yet come up with a UI that makes it accessible enough to everybody. We're working on a simple/advanced UI and will have something to that effect by the final release.
What was strange about it? All feedback is good...

I think the reorder function in G2 is great, it's very logical. I think he means where you say gallery x is after/before gallery y. I like it better it g2
As for the thumbs looking forward to the thumbs speed fix, any idea when it'll be in for testing?

Yep, it is in the way that the reorder is worded, and that I am used to G1 way of doing it. I think that it is just fine.
I think that the images look as if the thumbnails are being generated as they are loaded the first time in G2. After that, it seems faster, but still not as fast as G1. I guess that is a tradeoff of more functionality.

So, how do you sort the album?
