Gallery & Typo3 integration

I noticed a group of posts relating to integrating gallery into typo3. Most of these were in May 03.
Has there been any development regarding a simplified solution to this?
Has anyone completed this successfully?
I don't need to have the gallery display in the typo3 template, or have the pages searched etc. I just need to have a typo3 BE_user automatically logged in to gallery. Essentially 2 seperate aps running with the only commonality being the BE_user logged in to both.
