Appreciate not being forced to go to forums to pick up lates

As you know many BB systems send notices that a new message has been posted in a certain area which users can designate to be monitored. The trouble is: The notices just say there's a new message. Frequently, they would not use much more space if they just included the message itself. I really appreciate not being forced to go to forums to pick up latest messages.

I'd like to add this feature to a phpBB I'm currently installing. Where can I get this patch, add-on, mod, whatever it's called?
