Hello,

I live in Japan and have my Gallery set up with English and Japanese but would also like to add Chinese and other languages... My problem is I don’t know what the different types of Chinese eg. zh_TW, zh_CN etc. Why are there two possible choices and which one should I use? I would also like to add German, but from the download page I don’t know which pack is German... (Yeah, I know I am an uneducated web site builder but don’t hold it against me... I am sure I am not alone...)

I think a short description of each language pack should be included up front on the main languages page so that people who are not ‘native’ in the different languages can better understand them and know which ones to use.

The language packs use the ISO 639 standard. You can check these pages for details:
http://www.unicode.org/onlinedat/languages.html
http://www.unicode.org/onlinedat/countries.html

For chinese, zh_TW is traditional chinese for Taiwan and zh_CN is simplified chinese for China. The 2 character sets are different.

Besides, Hong Kong usually uses traditional chinese and Singapore uses simplified chinese.

Excellent links, thank you.

I do still feel that it would be great to include somewhere on the Gallery home page (possibly in a Sticky in this Languages section) a list of the language codes (to save forum members the trouble of replying to questions like mine) and a simple description of the languages that have two or three different character sets. (Chinese, Russian, Portuguese...)

That way, people who want to include the languages but don’t know about the details of each one can quickly know where the version of the language is used and by who, etc.

BTW, in relation to the Stickies for each of the languages that are in individual folders (eg.Sticky: Polish Translation) on the opening page of the Gallery 1.xx Tranlations (this discussion), might not it be better to put all of these Stickies into subfolders within a single folder. If that were to happen, the questions that everyone need answered would begin on the first page, not on the second...

In the future, as more languages are added to Gallery, the questions will begin appearing on the third page and so on!

I think it is a hassle to have to click through each page to get to the questions...
