How far along is the UI engine

I'm thinking about creating a new layout and theme to match the rest of my site and I want to know if it will be worth the effort to do it now or wait. I don't want to do all that work and have to redo it because of changes to the code. So my question is do you expect a lot of changes to the UI engine between now and final.

Thanks,
Stephen Cupp

The short answer is: I don't know.

There are aspects of the current layout system that I'm unhappy with, but I don't yet know if they're workable or not. Only mindless and I have written layouts so I don't feel like I've gotten enough feedback from the community on whether it's easy or hard to write them.

We won't make significant changes our templating system, nor will we make really big changes our basic data model between now and final. But we will probably try to refine the layout system to make it easier for people to write new layouts. It would be very helpful to us if you'd attempt it and give us feedback either here or in the #gallery irc channel so that we can figure out how to make the whole process easier. If you put the time into it, we'll support you and help you to keep your layout up to date as we make changes.

OK I'll take a stab at it. I'll let you know if I have any questions.
