can webcrawlers trigger visit counter increase?

can anything on the web other than actual visitors trigger visit counter to increase?

sure and the hit count is rising and rising :)
if you don't wish that behaviour you could prevent it from doing so.
almost all big search engines (google, inktomi slurp :), ...) identify themself when crawling through your pages.

so how can i tell gallery not to count those indentifiable crawlers?

That would probably require small code modifications to the counter code; however, you can just tells the bots not to probe those pages by using robots.txt if you like.
