Joerg,

You are such a stud I know you will be able to crank this out with your eyes closed!

What would be really nice is an admin console selection list that will let the admin select/omit any or all albums to include in the random rotation. This way I could have multiple random blocks on a page but have pictures relating only to a specific topic in a specific area.

If you can do this I will have you declared the random block hero!

Can anyone else make use of this?

John

I sure could use this! I would like the option to be configured by the admin only and not a user option. This way I could make one album a demo album and have it use random pics from that one only and could still have only registered and logged in users view the whole album. Hope this makes sense.

Thank you,
Marie Alline

Hi,

yes that would be a nice feature.

I'll try to do that.

Marie:
But I don't know if I can implement the whole rights system of the gallery. Therefore I have to get rid of the block-random.cache file in the album directory and I think that could result in some trouble with the performance if you have big albums.

Hello Joerg,
I am wondering if this could be implemented with a separate feature, like a plugin or module to set the random block option to operate using just a demo album? Or would it require a whole rewrite?

Thank you,
Marie Alline

I am so happy to see others can make use of this too! I have multiple city/town based sites so I end up having multiple photo albums (heaven forbid we show a Livermore picture in Pleasanton in the random block!). Then, since I am duch a *great* photographer, I would like to have a portolio of all my work--but again, creating a superset of all the other albums means a dup of every picture... and it is all because of the random block!

Having this random (selective) block would allow me to pack it all in one! Thanks for making the effort Joerg!

One of the nice things about being able to choose which albums are displayed would be the incentive for a little competition with my members to upload nicer photos. I could have them submit photos to show especially in the random block. Gives them a little recognition for better photography, plus the really bad ones wouldn't be displayed. lol!

Thanks,
Marie Alline

Hi Folks,

I tried to make it possible to let you select an album to display. Please try the latest beta. I hope it fits your needs.

You can select the album from the block-config (the list is not sorted yet!). It only displays the contents of the selected album not of the nested albums in it. I know that's not nice, but I had not much time and it's better for the performance, too.) The listed albums are from the block-random.cache - file. So there are only albums on which everybody has the right to read.

Waiting for feedback!

Can I use this as a stand alone block? I have phpWebsite and am using Muggles modifications. How can I use it for that?

Thank you,
Marie Alline

Joerg....assume job. I implemented the .41 block and noticed the problem (as discussed here and elsewhere) with the block pulling up images from albums that the user shouldn't have access to.

I saw this thread, downloaded the beta and put it in. Works like a champ.

One humble request for future versions is I hope that several albums can be chosen to be displayed from and not just one. Or pick the ones to exclude.

Perhaps build a list of album names with a radio button or checkbox to include/exclude the albums images.

Just a thought on how to do it. If you could pick several from the dropdown (like picking moderators from the list of users for a BBSforum...like the phpBB_14 postnuke module) that would probably be ideal.

Thanks so very much, this block works out great.
Cheers,

Any way we can wake this thread up again? I am the original requestor and I have not yet used the block you created with the exclude/include ability because it still does not offer the flexability I would need. Being able to do multiple album excludes would be really important and useful to me.

Thanks for your hard work and bug fixes so far. Keep up the great work!

John
