On the topic of Advanced search features for version 2.x...
Keywords are nice, but they are cumbersome for proper complex
searching.
How about being able to create your own optional search
categories and be able to assign the different categories to the
photos once they are uploaded? A category can have several
individually stored values for each photo.
In an advanced search screen, when you click on a category
that you want to search, you get a list of values already used for
that category accross all photos or a set of particular albums that
the user has access to. You can search for multiple values for
each category and for as many categories as you want with
boolean inclusions and exclusions (AND, OR).
The reason I think that this feature would be advantageous is for
tracking, for example, subjects (people) in the photos. You can
create a people category and have a list of people. Therefore
now you can put a list of people that appear in a photo. In your
database backend, you have stored each person once and just
propagate their category value id in a table that joins photographs
and category values. Photos that don't have people don't
have "people" category value entries.
Now you can search across albums for all photographs in which
John Doe and John Q Public both appear. You can futher
decide to add a vehicle category. Then you can search for all
photographs that contain John Doe and John Q Public (for the
people category) and a Maserati (for the vehicle category).
WHAT DO YOU THINK ???

I found a photo album that has the feature that approaches what I was talking about:
http://www.nother.net/zoph/
You can catalog people and places that appear in the photograph and you can make complex searches. This is what gallery needs!
Check it out! Can gallery hijacksome of these ideas?

I found a new photo gallery too. It's at http://www.instantlogic.com. The company offers free hosting as well.

Why would I want to BUY a product when I can get a better one (gallery) for free? Open Source is the ONLY sensible way to go!

Cumulus (commercial product) does this well, but it requires client software with seat licenses for administration, etc. Not as flexible in user management (sub-admins, etc.) either.
