"Edit Thumbnail" broken -- Gray Box?!

I just installed 1.4.2, and when logged in, the "Edit Thumbnail" function results in a pop up box with a gray area...

This is on WinXP, IE6.

I read about some old problems with "Edit Thumbnail" but no deifnitive answer. Does anyone know what's going on?
