.htaccess can't be chmodded on my server

Hi Ive got another problem.

I'm on step 3 of "Installing on a Unix/Linux Server with FTP".
And my server (free.fr) doesn't recognize the "chmodd" command so I can't set the permissions of .htaccess and config.php AT ALL.

We tried everything but FTP expert always says "chmodd command unrecognized"...

So I really don't know what to do? :evil:

Should I use another server (though it's supposed to be a reliable one)

You're going to have quite a hard time getting Gallery to work without chmod, and it will be impossible if your host won't help. Be wary of free sites like that too, they may have necessary functions disabled.

"chmod" is not "chmodd".

But if "chmod" (with *one* D) is still not working, then it's going to be very difficult if not impossible for Gallery to run on that webserver. I suggest in that case you go in search of a new web host.
