I was deleting my albums one at a time. While one of the albums was deleting, I opened another tab and was doing other browsing. When I went back to the gallery tab it was on the install screen. All of my albums have been deleted. The var folder is now entirely empty.

I would restore a recent backup.
There a report of a similar issue http://galleryproject.org/node/103239 but have never been able to reproduce.

No backup so I had to rebuild the whole site. The odd thing is that deleting an album, deleted the whole var folder, which includes the albums, logs, and the database connection file. This is obviously a bug, because there should be no way for a user to delete the database connection file.
The lesson learned here, is to never trust this software to be the only source that stores all of your photos. Luckily I just use it to share photos with family.

The lesson should be, never trust
thisany software be the only the source for storing your photos... that's what backups are for. Hate to be the 'nag', but it's reality. Nothing is 100% where technology is involved.I know not many people care about backups, but they sure do care about restores!
A CEO once said to me, "No, we're not spending $300k on a new backup system, next..." so I moved on to the next item on my capital list, a quote for a $300k Data Restoration system; his response, "Approved!"
