Interesting - I had recently also come to the same conclusion that if I need to migrate, I would also choose Piwigo. When I was originally looking at gallery solutions many years ago, I was tossing up between G3 and Piwigo. In the end I was drawn to G3 because of its active community, it did just want I wanted and because of the fact that it was security audited (wow, hadn't heard that in open source projects before - see http://galleryproject.org/gallery_3.0_released).
However G3 is down but not out. G3 is a great system and I am hopeful that those with the right skills may step in to continue the project. Even if the project ceases, I'll probably still be running G3 for some time on my offline box at home with the family photos on it.
In the meantime, there is nothing wrong with testing the waters out there and it is probably wise to do so in these uncertain times.
Thanks for summarising the available options.
