Image uploading problems

I just did a major re-install on my server, including to gallery-3.0.9. Everything migrated fine, but I can't add new images.

If I manually create a new album, it comes up owned by apache with permissions 755. Even if I manually fix that and click "Add photos," the "Select photos" menu comes up, but clicking on it doesn't do anything.

If I use "Server add," it still creates an apache-owned 755 directory. Clicking on "Add" from the menu, does all the right stuff, saying it added all the right images, the Maintenance screen says the upload was successful, but there are no images in the directory.

Finally, since it's my own server, I'd be happy to just copy my images to a directory under var/albums. Is there a way to tell gallery to just scan that diectory and do whatever it's supposed to do?

BTW, if it's relevant, the gallery3 top directory is symlinked under /var/www/html as /var/www/html/Photoalbum.

Well, one problem solved: re "the "Select photos" menu comes up, but clicking on it doesn't do anything," actually it was doing something: a file selection dialogue was popping _under_ the Firefox window. Weird, but I use auto-raise/auto-focus, so there might have been some kind of interaction.

Have you logged in as administrator? Those buttons don't appear unless you're logged in with the right privileges.

Yeah, I am the admin - I uploaded before I updated - once we did I literally lost any way to upload

Not sure what you can do about it, but if you're running Linux and apache, at least on my system, apache creeates directories that might or might not be identifiable to gallery3 as being writable. If gallery thinks that either the current album or the parent of the current album is unwritable, it won't show the buttons. (.../gallery3/modules/gallery/helpers/gallery_event.php:299) Manually adhusting the permissions of those directories might help.
