Child image items?

I love Gallery3 and I'm trying to configure it to work with an art website. I know Gallery3 is focused on photographs but there isn't really a good solution for art sites that work well. There's Booru but it lacks album management so it won't work for what I want.

With the images I want to post, a lot of times there are multiple versions of an image. It'd be nice to be able to link it to another image or have an item show related images. I believe this could also be useful for photographers as they could take several group shots at say a wedding and let the client choose the best one of several. I'm not too concerned with having separate tags and other properties for each image version, but it'd be nice.

I'm not sure if this would be best as a module or a modification to the base core, but it's something I would love to have.

If there's another gallery engine that does what I need, please let me know too. I'm open to suggestions.

Not sure I totally get what you're looking to do.
Based on what I do understand, couldn't you just name them the same, but maybe with a sequential number at the end? Then you could query the "related images" based on that name/title similarity.

There are some cases where I wouldn't want the child items to appear when browsing folders but just as thumbnails under the parent item and you click those then can view the child item(s).

I'm still not sure what the specifics are that you're looking to do. Based on what I gather, it's doable, but obviously requires a generous amount of custom coding.
Maybe someone else will better understand the full objective, or maybe you have an image that shows exactly what you're looking to do?

I'm with tempg here. Fitting this requirement into a module/theme is doable but requires some knowledge of the very narrow (not many users would use it) user-story and coding knowlage.

Why not just make an album when this is required, and then set the highlight for the 'primary' image?
